A movie about the italian way to divorce

In the 1960s a law introducing divorce in Italy was strongly opposed by the Church and Italians were divided between "favorevoli" (in favour of divorce) and "contrari" (opposers). In this "Scusi lei e' favorevole o contrario?" Alberto Sordi plays his usual role of the little italian rascal: he makes business with the clergy, proclaims himself a 100% Roman Catholic and a strong opposer of divorce, but has a really peculiar private life, living separated from his wife (Giulietta Masina) and playing the whole week with six girl-friends, one for day; and only on Sunday he finally takes a rest...

It's really difficult to call this a masterpiece; Sordi is good as usual, but nothing different from usual; and 35 years after, almost everything seems dated in this movie.

(Yawn)

I saw this back when it was released in Paris. In those days I had only begun to watch films seriously so I didn't have much experience concerning when to leave or when I was allowed to get bored. I stayed through the whole thing - all three hours plus - and came out genuinely perplexed. It was a talkathon, no question about that, and at times it seemed to me that the actors were just making things up as they went along, just treading dramatic water as it were. Although not much of anything happened or was even said, the characters discussed the nothingness to the point of madness, I thought. It seemed at the time to be a huge joke on the audience. The director did in fact make a commercially viable film years late with "Celine et Julie...", still quite long - to the point of undermining itself - but not as obnoxiously obsessed with its "meaning" or "significance". There are in fact many good French films out there that aren't endurance contests as I subsequently found out.

Wattching the show, but unacquainted, are Mike Evans (Bill Craig), on the prowl to boost his sagging music firm, and Maggie Hendricks (Stephanie Hill), a reporter for People Magazine assigned to do a story on modern country music. They both sense in Pat the answer to their problems. They both head for the Hubbard ranch and are met by Pat's sister Beth (Kristin Harmonas Kristin Nelson), who tells them that Pat is only interested in becoming a cattle-barn auctioneer. This evolves into two romances, six songs sung by would-be-auctioneer Pat, some misunderstandings, and a whole lot of traveling music. Producer Wendell Niles Jr. would later produce better shows.

Review :

classic 1960s country-western drive-in film--fine cast, weak songs

Finally got a chance to see this 1967 vehicle for country singer Leroy Van Dyke, which I missed at the drive-in 35+ years ago. In scratchy widescreen

techniscope, the film tells the story of a young man who gets out of the navy and stumbles into recognition in the country music world, even though he initially doesn't want it and wants to go into a career as an auctioneer. This of course allows Van Dyke to perform a new version of his classic hit "The Auctioneer", which sounds great, and Mr. Van Dyke is also a natural on-screen as an actor. His sister is played by the charming Kris

Nelson (Harmon), best known perhaps from the Ozzie and Harriet tv series with her then-husband Rick Nelson. She is wonderful in the role and I wish she had done more acting (someday I hope to see her 1970 film The Resurrection of Broncho Billy), although she has had a successful career as an artist for the last few decades. Tex Ritter and Faron Young also perform songs in the film, the problem is that the songs are all originals by writer-director Gene Nash, and frankly they are not very good, awkwardly written and with melodies that just aren't memorable...or easy to sing. Pros that they are, Ritter and Young and VanDyke manage to make the awkward songs sound convincing, but I'm sure they realized these tunes were duds as they were giving it their all. However, with the distance that almost 40 years gives us, the songs are of the period and we can tolerate them (it's interesting that most of them start of sounding country, but evolve through the song into bloated productions with choirs and strings)...almost. The role of a hungry record producer who is interested romantically in Kris Nelson is played by Bill Craig, who with his fine speaking voice and Bob Eubanks-esque diction sounds like an American disc jockey to me. Perhaps he was a successful country dj of the time and got into this film the way Ralph Emery got into some of the other low-budget country-western films of the 60s. In any event, Craig does a nice job and has a good amount of charisma--a shame he wasn't in more films. Bowery Boys fans will be excited to see Billy Benedict in a funny supporting role--I won't tell you when so you'll be surprised. Overall, this should appeal to the fan of films such as HILLBILLIES IN A HAUNTED HOUSE and NASHVILLE REBEL--and for once, the plot is at least equal to the musical performances, if not even given MORE weight. As of this writing, I believe Leroy Van Dyke is still touring widely across the nation, especially during county fair season, and he is still an exciting performer, one of the last of the old-school REAL country music singers. I think I'll go listen to him sing "Walk On By..."

SUCCUBUS (1967) ***

This was an early color film for Franco but he seems to have mastered the new process with relatively little problems, here utilizing a decidedly Bava-esque palette (the famous scene with the mannequins, for instance). SUCCUBUS is considered a transitional film for Franco because, from here on in, the emphasis on eroticism will become much more pronounced until it almost turns into pornography sometime during the next decade. I haven't watched any films from the latter category but this film certainly pushes the issue as far as it was permissible at the time! Here, too, because of its dream-like nature (as was also to prove the case later with A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD [1971]) the film's narrative lapses and general 'incoherence' are easier to accept than in, say, EUGENIE DE SADE (1970) where one does not really expect to find such liberties – though I am beginning to realize that, with Franco, virtually anything goes!

Even though he does not receive credit for writing the screenplay, it is hard to imagine that Franco had no hand in its actual conception, as the themes the film explores are certainly in keeping with the rest of his oeuvre (right from the very first scene, the sleazy nightclub act, which reappears over and over in his films). While the plot is not easy to follow (it actually pays to read about it beforehand, because otherwise it would be practically impossible to make head or tails of anything!), it copiously references noted figures from the various arts – paintings, literature, cinema, music – which apparently pre-occupied Franco during this period. Unfortunately, most of it is probably beyond the reach of most audiences (myself included) but I must say that I was very pleased to learn that Franco, through a line spoken in the film by Janine Reynaud, held Bunuel, Lang and Godard as the epitome of cinema – three film-makers whose work is unmistakably linked (Bunuel chose film as his creative métier after watching Lang's DESTINY [1921]; Lang appears as himself in Godard's CONTEMPT [1963]) and all of whom clearly influenced Franco in the initial phases of his career. In particular, there is a brief repeated scene where Michel Lemoine, looking straight at the camera, describes Reynaud as 'a devil on earth' which reminded me of a similar 'gimmick' used by Bunuel in THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL (1962).

The film has some very striking imagery (not least of all, the two S&M scenes that were pretty much taboo at this point) with the soft-focus and often sensual dream sequences being particular highlights; another key scene finds Reynaud and Jack Taylor going up to her castle and he recounts the tale of Faustine, a Succubus, to her. But, even in this shortened version of the film, one still has to contend with banal passages like the drugged costume party sequence and other moments where the pace drops. Also, I have a quibble regarding the film's latter stages: why did Jack Taylor all of a sudden want to do away with the Janine Reynaud character (the irony of his unconsciously 'hiring' the Devil himself to do this is interesting but it remains frustratingly unexplained).

The music, as is customary for a Franco film, provides the perfect counterpoint to the onslaught of visual and narrative ideas; special care is also taken with the sound effects which are meant to illustrate Janine Reynaud's disorientation (and, with her, the viewer's). The casting of the main roles is appropriate as well: Reynaud may not rank among Franco's loveliest leading ladies but it is arguable whether anyone could have essayed the part with more conviction and, in any case, her sensual body is certainly utilized to the hilt throughout; Jack Taylor is commanding enough as her shady manager/lover; Michel Lemoine makes for a mysterious and sinister Mephistophelean figure; Howard Vernon's brief appearance is a natural, and typically professional.

Obviously, I would love to see the original full-length German-language version of the film released as a SE DVD, but one wonders whether that will ever come to pass. At least, my VHS copy was a one-up on the now-OOP R1 Anchor Bay DVD, as the film was presented in its correct (I assume) widescreen ratio! The film's silly pan-and-scan theatrical trailer (for the U.S. version) was also included.

Hurt by a drifting narrative, but a decent vehicle for pretty Hayley...

Bookish, virginal British lass cuts loose on vacation in Singapore, where she has a romance with her hotel escort, a local young man who may be a gigolo. From a Noel Coward story, with some surprising and funny twists and turns, but the film doesn't know quite when or how to wrap things up. In the lead, Hayley Mills is self-effacing and a little bit feisty; her makeover from a flamboyant male hairdresser is amusing, as is her later switch to teasing tourist. After Mills left the Disney company, British filmmakers mostly seemed interested in getting rid of her darned virginity; this vehicle is no different, though the colorful location is nicely captured and Trevor Howard has a terrific role as Hayley's uncle (he has a speech near the end that evokes many dimensions). Not a complete success, and the Polly character is eventually so mercurial in her emotions that we don't know where we stand with her. Otherwise, an entertaining travelogue and Mills is always worth watching. **1/2 from ****

Viva Django!

Of all the unofficial "Django"-sequels(40+), this is the one that sticks closest to the original. This time around, Django is portrayed by a pre-Trinity Terrence Hill. Hill does his best to copy the original performance by Franco Nero, and succeeds. Director Ferdinando Baldi co-wrote this with Franco Rossetti (who also co-wrote the Corbucci film), and the result is an extremely entertaining film, with plenty of action, and enjoyable performances. This is nowhere the really great spaghetti westerns such as "Keoma", "Bullet For The General", and the works of Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci, but fans of the genre will be more than pleased. The ending is the best bit, and was actually copied in the only official "Django"-sequel, "Django Strikes Again". Extremely hard to find, but well worth the search.

a middle-aged woman with depression meets her only daughter 18 yeas after she abandoned her husband

This is a rather depressing story about a woman who suffers depression and returns to Spain from Venezuela, where she has been living with her wealthy lover. This woman, well played by a dubbed Viveca Lindfors, seeks treatment in an asylum which appears to be located near Madrid. Although they hadn't meet since she was a 4 years old child, her daughter (a dull Sonia Bruno) is not resentful, and joins the mother in the asylum, where the patient will undergo a psychodrama treatment. The plot revolves around both women's difficult relationships with their respective lovers, and the rich patients who surround the middle-aged (Viveca and Francisco Rabal) and young (Sonia Bruno and Julian Mateos) couples. Some other small characters which are quite interesting are patients such as a highly neurotic blonde bombshell actress (played by lovely Gisia Paradis), a bipolar and gossipy woman (Laly Soldevilla)...both providing a few very welcome camp humour relax moments to an otherwise very gloomy story. I liked the psychodrama session scene with Viveka and Rabal reenacting the scene that triggered her depression, and I think that the film was well handled, had good production values, good development of characters. Maybe the young couple lacked charisma, and some scenes were a little bit slow-paced. Francisco Rabal played his usual strong male-voiced masculine self, and if effective, I don't find him interesting. Viveca Lindfors was very compelling, and with her use of body and facial expressions managed to bring to life her not very appealing part of a depressed bourgeois housewife. Julian Mateos had a nice body at the time, and was OK as the tortured alcoholic and violent patient who seduces the visiting sweet Sonia Braga. Overall, a curious example of the Spanish attempt at a sort of new wave in the 1960's by the prestigious Miguel Picazo (La Tia Tula, 1964), and mainly recommended to Miss Lindfors' fans.

Detective Virgil Tibbs is caught up in the racial tension of the US South when he is arrested after the murder of a prominent businessman. Tibbs was simply waiting for his next train at the station in Sparta, Mississippi and the confusion is soon resolved but when local police chief Gillespie learns that Tibbs is the Philadelphia PD's number one homicide expert, he reluctantly asks for his assistance. The murdered man, Mr. Colbert, had come to Sparta from the North to build a new factory and his wife and business associates immediately point the finger at Endicott, the most powerful man in the county and the one who had the most to lose if a major new employer comes to the area. Tibbs' life is clearly in danger but he perseveres in a highly charged and racially explosive environment until the killer is found.

Review :

"They call me Mister Tibbs!"

Whether he likes it or not, Sidney Poitier will always be remembered first and foremost as the first black actor to continuously star alongside and above his white counterparts. Just look at the opening credits to "In the Heat of the Night" and you will see that not only does he get an above the title starring credit with method maniac Rod Steiger, but his name also appears first. Something that could have easily been switched around and overlooked considering the importance of each character. But for this socially aware thriller born of the turbulent sixties, it had to be, most definitely, a conscious choice.

For Poitier, this film, along with "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?", marks the last of his civil rights driven roles in which his character's race is an all important plot element. From "Edge of the City" to "The Defiant Ones", Poitier excelled in bringing intelligent and commanding three dimensional characters to life. A feat he had to succeed at if his films were to gain the trust of a predominantly white audience and push for racial equality. Call him the Jackie Robinson of Hollywood.

When we first see Poitier as Virgil Tibbs, he is stepping off the train in the small Mississippi town of Sparta. Although we can only see him from the waist down, we do get a quick glimpse of his hand and from that we are aware of his race. An important fact for the audience to dwell on later when Rod Steiger as sheriff Gillespie, standing over a dead body on Main Street, and calls for his deputy to round up any strangers for questioning. From that moment on, director Norman Jewison establishes the racial tension that will only grow more and more intense as the film goes on.

Sometimes, the film is far from subtle in exploring the issue of racism. Endicott's plantation, complete with tall white pillars and a black jockey lawn ornament to guard them, is a perfect example. What starts off as a surprisingly civil conversation between Tibbs and Endicott quickly turns heated and unpredictable. From that moment on, the experience will serve to cloud Tibbs' judgment and bring his own flaws to the surface, making him almost as complex a character as Gillespie.

And it is the complexity of Gillespie that got Steiger the Best Actor Oscar over Poitier in 1968. This man has heart, but not made of gold, and his motivations are far from pure. He is simply a man who believes in doing his job, and doing it as just as possible - even if it means arresting a friend for murder. Take for an example the scene in which Tibbs is surrounded by a gang of blood thirsty locals. When Gillespie arrives to save the day, he simply gives them a warning and tells them to go home. It is only when they insult him personally that he becomes angry and takes a swing. His action is just - his motivation almost vain.

In the end, after the murder is solved and racial injustice is swept back under the rug, Tibbs and Gillespie say their farewells and continue on with their very different lives. Each one better off for knowing the other.

I guess that "Die Holle von Macao" (called "The Corrupt Ones" in the US) is the sort of movie that you can only find in Movie Madness here in Portland. Oh come on folks. THIS IS AN ELKE SOMMER MOVIE!!!!!!!!! You don't watch this sort of movie to have a life-changing experience; you watch it to see her, uh, features. Some people may claim that this movie's just trying to be a James Bond movie. SO WHAT?!!!!!!! It's Elke Sommer, people! Who cares about a decrepit old right-winger like Robert Stack dodging bullets when you've got her hot features on the screen? I know. You say that my infatuation with her is inane, immature, pathetic, and non-respectable, given that she mostly starred in skin flicks in the '60s and hasn't done much since then. Well too bad. I've always found her hotter than the likes of Julia Roberts. In fact, that's why I gave this movie 5/10 stars: the plot is pretty routine, but her presence makes it worthwhile. If I was going to make a movie, I'd do everything possible to try and get her a role, even if it was the same kind of role with which she's always been associated. Hubba hubba...

A notable Paella Western with a Spaghetti great star , Peter Lee Lawrence , and being compellingly directed by Julio Buchs

This above-average Tortilla Western packs thrills , action , brawls , crossfire and drags at times , balancing in ups and downs ; though resulting to be pretty entertaining . This interesting as well revisionist Chorizo Western titled "I'll Kill Him and Return Alone" (USA title) is partially based on real events , it blends true events along with fictitious , the plot is developed on the following way : At the beginning Billy (Peter Lee Lawrence) lives happily with his widow mother (Gloria Milland) . Then Billy's mother is raped by Tom McGregor (Antonio Molino Rojo) and the young gunfighter kills to him . Billy is pursued by Peter McGregor (Miguel Palenzuela) and hoodlums (Luis Barboo) and takes place a gundown . Billy flees and he early becomes a cowboy in Lincoln County, New Mexico , for cattleman Tunstall (Luis Prendes). But in 1878 Tunstall was killed by a rival cattle outfit (Antonio Pica , Alfonso De La Vega, Jose Canalejas) led by Murphy (Carlos Casaravilla) and this began the Lincoln County War, in which Billy played a leading part and was one of the group that shot dead Sheriff Brady . Billy seeks revenge for his death and he converted an outlaw and nasty gunfighter with a price on his head . Bonney and his gang pull off a hot pursuit against the enemies . At that time the Lincoln County War was in progress ,a range war between rival cattle interests, the Kid was a leading gunman for one faction but Pat Garrett , a former friend of Billy , stayed out of the fighting . When Billy became a rustler, the big ranch owners, especially John Chisum , wanted him out of the way and the man they chose to do the job was Pat Garrett . Billy, his band (Enrique Avila, Luis Rivera , among others) were besieged but he went out firing his gun and made his escape . Then Pat Garrett (Fausto Tozzi) was elected sheriff of Lincoln County and set out to capture the young outlaw . The Kid was caught and convicted of killing but he managed to escape . Garrett went after him again and on 15 July 1881 tracked him to the home of Pete Maxwell at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, where Billy was along with his band and there Billy was dead by surprise . Legend says that Billy killed twenty-one men in his twenty-one years of life, the exact figure is not known but is thought to be much less .

This is an intense and moving Western about a known gunslinger, the most famous outlaw-gunfighter of the South-west . However , some moments is slow moving and contains a few flaws and gaps. This is a revisionist look about the known story of the West's greatest bandit. Contemporary-style Spaghetti Western with nice performances and fine direction by Julio Buchs who creates some good action scenes and exciting set pieces . The notorious Spaghetti actor , Peter Lee Lawrence is good in his usual tough role , here playing the known and very young bandit . The Kid is well performed , he plays as an avenger , violent young and favourite with girls , this time with Dyanik Zurakowska as Helen . Blond German youth Peter Lee Lawrence, who made his uncredited debut in Sergio Leone "For A Few Dollars More" (1965), was the hero in many Spaghetti Westerns. His short cinematographic history can be enclosed in nine years of Italo-Spain co-productions such as "More Dollars for the MacGregors" , ¨Winchester justice¨,"Pistol for a Hundred Coffins", ¨The man who killed Billy the Kid¨ , ¨Fury of Johnny Kid¨ and several others . Furthermore , a largely secondary cast plenty with Spanish secondaries , all of them ordinary in Chorizo western as Antonio Pica , Jose Canalejas , Alfonso Rojas , Alvaro De Luna , Simon Arriaga , Luis Barboo , Rafael Hernandez , Francisco Sanz , Milo Quesada , Frank Braña , Enrique Avila , Luis Induni , Luis Prendes and many others . Adequate photography by Miguel Fernandez Mila , being necessary a right remastering because of the film copy is washed out , filmed on location in Las Rozas , Manzanares Del Real , La Pedriza , , and of course , Almeria . The movie was produced in enough budget by Ricardo Sanz and being accompanied by a rousing musical score by Gianni Ferrio , including enjoyable songs .

The motion picture was well directed by Julio Buchs . Julio Buchs was an expert on thriller as he proved in ¨Salario De Crimen¨, ¨Alta tension¨ and ¨Trumpets of Apocalypse¨ and Spaghetti such as ¨Los Desesperados¨ or ¨A bullet for Sandoval¨ , ¨I'll kill him and return alone¨ also titled ¨El Hombre Mató Billy Kid¨ and ¨Mestizo¨ or ¨Django does not forgive¨ . ¨El Hombre Mato a Billy Kid¨ along with ¨A bullet for Sandoval¨ , are considered two of the best Spaghettis ; the Buchs's best film was ¨Encrucijada Una Monja¨ with Rosanna Schiaffino playing a similar character to ¨Audrey Hepburn's The nun's story¨ ; all of them were well directed by Julio until his early death at 46 years old .

Review :

"Hello, Benjamin."

What a wonderful time capsule. Not being old enough to grasp the entire "Swinging 60's" movement, I can't help but think this was pretty true to form to what was going on back then. Dustin Hoffman is of course great, but Ann Bancroft steals the movie, dominating every scene even when she's not in it. It must have been quite a risk for her to not only play an "older woman," especially in age conscious Hollywood, but also to play so much against "type." The music, the clothes, the houses all harken back to when America was discovering not every one lived like Ozzie and Harriet, and that a stiff martini could certainly loosen ones morals. The sexual energy this movie projects oozes across the screen and makes one feel like a voyeur.
