An Historical Landmark in Awfulness---Featuring a Stellar Cast

This may be one of the strangest A-List movies ever made. It has a superb international cast (U.S., Great Britain, Australia, Italy), but the story is unbearably childish, intolerably boring, and riddled with errors and plot missteps that defy belief. Just a very few: no cashiered foreign officer could possibly get a commission in the U.S. Army, much less rise to the rank of Colonel; no Colonel wears major's leaves as his rank insignia; no Colonel ever commanded a fort consisting of what appears to be no more than a squad of soldiers (not to mention that no frontier fort was ever held by a mere squad); no Americans served in the British Army's Sudan Campaign; Chuka NEVER misses his shots at the rapidly moving Indians, regardless the range and the fact that, rather than aiming, he lunges, throws out, his pistol when firing, which absolutely GUARANTEES a miss; poor Louis Hayward (at the end of his career) agrees to lead a mutiny, which no officer in the U.S. Armed Forces has ever done; there was no concept, ever, of a fort to which were banished incompetent, criminal officers and cast-off, second-rate men (where do they GET ideas like that?)---this could go on forever. Given the idiocies of the plot and parade of one moronic scene after another (e.g., the Commanding Officer going around the dinner table and grievously insulting every single officer in his command), it must be admitted that the highly professional cast did its very best with the hopeless script (written by someone with no knowledge of the military or the American West)---but that was like trying to breathe life into the first 500 pages of the Manhattan telephone directory. Years from now this film---given its stellar cast---will be pondered upon as one of the great mysteries in Hollywood production and film-making.

Tres belle!

As close to beautiful as any ballet production can get. I love Prokoviev's ballet, and Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn for good reason are considered the quintessential ballet partnership of the 20th century at least. The costumes are colourful, never overdone or ugly, the lighting is wonderfully delicate and while a little more abstract than one would expect for Romeo and Juliet the sets don't detract from the quality of the performance at all. The orchestral playing brings out the humour, tension and pathos of the score and drama wonderfully, matched perfectly by the conducting. The choreography is incredibly intricate and made to look easy when it really isn't.

It is danced impeccably by all involved. Desmond Doyle is evil personified as Tybalt, while David Blair and especially Anthony Dowell are perfect as Mercutio and Benvolio. But what really makes this Romeo and Juliet so watchable and re-watchable is the peerless performances and partnership of Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. Nureyev's Romeo has sheer magnetism and a huge amount of charisma, dancing-wise not once does he put a foot wrong. Fonteyn gives a youthful and aching vulnerability to Juliet that is just heart-wrenching to watch.

Overall, a stunningly beautiful performance. You'd be hard pressed to find a performance of this ballet better than this one. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Is this a movie? Or something much better?

There are many great things about 'La Chinoise', including its political and historical importance, which have been elaborately discussed by film enthusiasts all over the world, so I'd like to add only my very personal thoughts about this film. Personally, 'La Chinoise' stands very much apart from, if not above, all of the films I've seen. While other films of Godard make me feel they are great movies, 'La Chinoise' doesn't make me feel like that. It makes me feel as if I hadn't seen a film, as if I'd just had a very nice and exciting conversation with friends, as if I'd just had a very lively discussion with them, as if I'd just participated in a hot debate, as if I'd just quarreled with some people. No film ever made me feel like this.

Scenes and dialogues worthy of remembering in 'La Chinoise' are as innumerable as in other films of Godard. Forever imprinted on my memory are the scenes when Leaud can't understand what his girlfriend says without the help of music, the droll assassination scene, and most important of all, the discussion on the train. This train scene looks so simple, yet it is very subtle and powerful. I saw 'La Chinoise' the first time four years ago, and I felt very detached from the movie. Seeing it again, I think it is one of my most favorite now.

Surprisingly Ordinary Euro Western From The Blind Dead Director

I finally got a chance to see this Euro Western from Amando de Ossorio (THE BLIND DEAD) as a German home video release from the later 1980's called GNADENLOSE KILLER, and was very surprised to find it to be a rather pedestrian horse opera. George Martin stars as a beefy frontiersman who joins up with a rabble of hunter/prospector types operating along the US/Canadian border and running afoul of the Royal Mounties for some reason that escaped my high school textbook German. Things come to a head when they kidnap the only blond haired woman within a thousand miles as a bartering tool, who it turns out is all too happy to be removed from the clutches of the local land baron that paid good money to have a trophy wife sent up north to him.

Or something along those lines: What is interesting about seeing the film with only German audio and not understanding 90% of what is being said is that the film is reduced to it's simplest components and emerges as nothing more than competently made ready for TV B-western fare, without the kind of swaggering artsy flair usually associated with European made westerns. There are shootouts, duels, damsels in distress, a hot catfight between the film's ravishingly beautiful dark haired women, before finally settling into a bizarre cavalry fight between the Mounties and the frontiersmen, and it was here that I started to sense some of Ossorio's themes that would later emerge in his Blind Dead films.

Which was the reason I sought it out: Since Ossorio wrote the story & screenplay you'd think that early parallels to his horror movies would abound, and they do. We have the two "societies" or social organizations operating in conflict with each other, a public execution setting the stage for later conflict, a scene of fiendish torture against one of his lovely women actors, soldiers on horseback charging into battle with their sabers, a deadly female halfbreed warrior violently devoted to the white man she lusts for -- elements later seen in all of Ossorio's horror outings.

George Martin makes an appealing if somewhat ordinary he-man sort of lead, and more enjoyment is found watching the contributions of cult movie icons Franco Fantasia and Raf Baldessare as two of the frontiersmen. The costuming and equipment carried by the players is also amusingly odd: Nobody seems to be wearing any clothes more than a week old, and modern day police special pistols are used alongside of prop-ish looking firearms with little or no concern about authenticity. Characters use knives that are brand new, reflectively shiny and don't appear to be sharpened. The main point of the costuming and props seems to be to set the two societies apart: The Mounties wear funny Mountie hats, the frontiersmen wear fur hats fashioned from raccoons and leather vests.

Even more interesting is the location work, probably filming in the mountains of northern Spain as a substitute for Canada, and fans of the 1974 Peter Fonda movie OPEN SEASON will recognize the lake that much of the action is set around as being the location used for that movie's exteriors as well. The cabins & Mountie forts all look brand new, like they were built about a week before filming began, and the whole movie has a sort of phony glossy look to it that reminds me of old episodes of DAVY CROCKETT or even F-TROOP. Just with a body count around 100 dead on screen: The concluding fifteen minutes are surprisingly violent, but not in a way that seems necessary. More like he was told to add a cavalry battle with massive loss of life on both sides -- at one point he seems to run out of supporting characters to kill off, and the two lovers walk away alone rather than celebrating their victory because all their friends are dead.

Which isn't to say it's a bad movie, just not as imaginative as what Ossorio would later begin with MALENKA in 1968. He doubtlessly made this movie under a contract that included TOMB OF THE PISTOLERO from 1965, also with George Martin and Franco Fantasia. I'd love to see an English translation of the film & know exactly what is happening but don't hold out much hope. It's an incredibly obscure movie that has probably never gotten more than Cowboy Matinée showings on cable in it's English language form, if even then. But it would be right at home alongside such fare, sort of cunningly disguised as a cheapo 83 minute Western with lots of gunplay, dopey frontier romance and a musical interlude to get things going. Standard stuff, and that's just not what you'd expect from Amando de Ossorio at all, which is probably what makes it so interesting. I had no idea he was capable of making a movie that looked so ordinary.

Pretty well done spaghetti western

I'm glad that there is a DVD company (Wild East) in North America that is releasing a number of spaghetti westerns that never before got the attention in North America, probably due to the fact that they generally don't have the star power as other spaghetti westerns. I just watched one of their releases -"Taste Of Killing", and as a spaghetti western fan I was satisfied by the end for several reasons.

One reason is that the hero of this spaghetti western is not a superhero. Yes, he's smart and quick with a gun, but he doesn't seem to have mystical powers like other spaghetti western heroes. He can't read, for one thing, and in a few instances he relies on teaming up with townspeople so that his plans can succeed. Craig Hill does well playing this hero.

The script has a few other surprises as well. It's a more leisurely-paced movie, with not as much action as some other spaghetti westerns. (Though the action scenes are pretty good, especially the final shootout with the evil gang on the city streets.) But the script keeps up plenty of plot turns so viewers won't get bored. There's also plenty of focus on some of the supporting characters.

And as a bonus, there's a tuneful and lively score by Nico Fidenco. In short, there's a lot to like here. Maybe this isn't a spaghetti western to start with if you are unfamiliar with the genre, but for fans of the genre it will satisfy.

Lame caper flick

Saw this one on television 30 years ago, so my memories of it are a bit hazy. As I recall, Walter Pigeon plays a blind academic who has spent decades studding the Vatican's art treasures - don't ask me how a blind man does this - and decides to reward himself with a retirement in the sun paid for by ripping off some of said treasures. He enlists Kinsky and Von Furstenburg to do the heavy lifting and there follows the usual split-second timing, hair-breadth escapes and double-crosses. I like this sort of picture, but I recall being oddly unengaged by this one. Nice Roman location shooting, but not enough for me to really recommend the film. A rainy afternoon time waster.
