See It If You Get the Chance

If you're in the States, it seems there's a 99% chance you won't get a chance to see this consistently entertaining film, save for the outside possibility it's shown in a big-city arthouse theater. As you might've read from the description above, it concerns Marc (a typically charming, uncharacteristically manic Jean-Pierre Leaud), an automobile-obsessed young hairdresser in Brussels struggling to obtain money needed to finance the car he needs for an upcoming race. With no assistance from his coworkers, Marc enlists the help of Michele, the loyal girlfriend he keeps at arm's length (the likeable Catherine Duport) not only because of his immaturity, but his single-minded focus on car racing. As the earlier commentator said, a main reason for seeing this film is the charismatic presence of Leaud (it seems a tailor-made film for him), but another draw is the quiet intelligence Duport exudes, and the film's markedly mid-60's style. Krzysztof Komeda's energetic, jazz-tinged score is conspicuous yet completely relevant. Jerzy Skolimowski managed to craft a funny, modish, and assured film in a language that he apparently didn't even speak! Certainly worth a viewing, if you get the chance.

After Charles Dobbs, a security officer, has a friendly chat with Samuel Fennan from the Foreign Office, the man commits suicide. An anonymous typed letter had been received accusing Fennan of being a Communist during his days at Oxford and their chat while walking in the park was quite amiable. Senior officials want the whole thing swept under the rug and are pleased to leave it as a suicide. Dobbs isn't at all sure as there are a number of anomalies that simply can't be explained away. Dobbs is also having trouble at home with his errant wife, whom he very much loves, having frequent affairs. He's also pleased to see an old friend, Dieter Frey, who he recruited after the war. With the assistance of a colleague and a retired policeman, Dobbs tries to piece together just who is the spy and who in fact assassinated Fennan.

Review :

A very fine, intelligent movie (***½ out of ****)

A complex, suspenseful, and sometimes surprisingly funny spy thriller by master director Sidney Lumet ("12 Angry Men", "Long Day's Journey Into Night", "Dog Day Afternoon", "Running on Empty"). The picture has a really brilliant cast, including James Mason, Simone Signoret, Maximilian Schell, Harriet Andersson and Harry Andrews. The photography is interesting too. Lumet and cinematographer Freddie Young used a technique called "preflashing". In his book "Making Movies" Lumet writes: "Thematically it was a film about life's disappointments. I wanted to desaturate the colors. I wanted to get that dreary, lifeless feeling London has in winter. Freddie suggested preexposing the film."

Lumet's approach in "The Deadly Affair" (1967) is perhaps even a little too realistic to make it a suspense masterpiece. But nevertheless you should really see this little gem.

The crew takes advantage of this, leading a very comfortable and luxurious life on board. Not without financial problems though. One day the ships owner suddenly needs to sail on her. He is a very old school and disciplined person and certainly not satisfied with the state of the ship and the crew. But the crew shows their worth when they have to fight for the survival of their beloved old steamer.

Wonderful cartoon-ish comedy about lovable unreliable slobs

Martha is probably the best, the funniest, and most lovable comedy ever to come out of Denmark. At the time of its release it was a financial flop, but time has made it a classic. Many lovers of old classic danish comedies consider Martha to be the finest of its kind. Even for people who have seen it numerous times, little fine details can still be found. The team is excellent, the cast counts the most loved danish actors of that era, and Balling shows why is by many considered to be the master of popular comedy.

It should be noted though, that while the finished screenplay was written by director Erik Balling and production designer Henning Bahs in collaboration, the original story was conceived by Bahs and the actor Preben Kaas, who plays the cookie on board the ship.

This is stated in the credits on the home video/DVD cassette.

Just Not That Memorable...Well, The Movie, Anyway...

When CBS used to show late movies years and years ago, I remember staying up to watch this. There's only about two things I really recall: that Troy Donahue was in it, and that the theme song, performed by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (!) was at least halfway decent. So the previous reviewer certainly can't be blamed for not remembering the song or the lyrics (which rhymed "spy with me" and "variety".) Like many of the Bond knockoffs of the day, the song was about the only thing the audience was even meant to remember, if that. I just recall that the single was a much bigger hit than the movie ever was. So if you happen to stumble across it on cable, it's more of a curiosity piece than a "must-see."

John 'Hombre' Russell is a white man raised by the Apaches on an Indian reservation and later by a white man in town. As an adult he prefers to live on the reservation. He is informed that he has inherited a lodging-house in the town. He goes to the town and decides to trade the place for a herd. He has to go to another city. The only stagecoach is one being hired for a special trip paid by Faver and his wife Audra. As there are several seats others join the stagecoach making seven very different passengers in all. During the journey they are robbed. With the leadership of John Russell they escape with little water and the money that the bandits want. They are pursued by the bandits. As they try to evade the bandits they reveal their true nature in a life threatening situation.

A Character Study or A Study of Character

Is this movie not a micro-view of society? We have a certain class structure. We have heroes and villains. We have one man, who, perhaps by virtue of his Apache affinity, is essentially "at one" with himself. He tells the person who comments that they had mistakenly believed that he was taking the money for himself, "What you think is your business." He is unaffected. He knows who he is, what he's about, and is not "on the string," dancing to the tune that others would call for him. He has his own code; his own values, and he demonstrates them -- in action -- throughout this fine film. Richard Boone is great as Grimes, and the overall cast is very good. This movie, in some ways, could be taken apart, viewed, and reviewed much the same way as Henry Fonda's "12 Angry Men." There is much to admire about this movie . . . much to admire in the character, John Russell.

It's a intolerable to watch! It's experimental avant garde!--It's both!

You know when you let your mind drift--especially when under the influence of drugs or alcohol--and you think up some idea that sounds like it would be great? A typical non-genius would consider an idea like that later and think, "well, this sounded like a good idea then but it's just stupid now?" Thankfully, Warhol said to himself, "no, I'm a genius and therefore that was a good idea."

And what was this brilliant idea?

Film a bunch of drug users and couples in various rooms of a hotel then project two films at a time side-by-side, shifting the audio to switch focus.

Doesn't that sound amazingly fresh and cool?

Review :

A beautiful poetic movie

In a foreword by Georges Lautner, the director of the movie, he explains that he always alternated serious and comedy movies. La Grande Sauterelle is a follow up of Galia a drama which Lautner directed in 1966, the same year as an other comedy, "Ne nous fâchons pas". In 1967 he decided to return to more serious scenario and what makes the charm of the movie is the great sensitivity which surrounds the whole movie and the dialogs especially Francis Blanche which is playing a small part here. The crime aspect of the movie is not important. It's here to show how two very different human beings can suddenly become related to one another to the point to change the course of the life of one of them. Hardy Kruger and Mireille Darc are perfectly matched in the movie, not only because of their handsomeness but also because through their rather limited dialogs they are capable of transmitting to the viewer the emotions and thoughts of a whole generation at a moment when a profound change in the perception of life was going to happen or even was happening. Of course today younger generations cannot perceive what was at stake in those years and the film can only be fully appreciated by people who were reaching their adult life at that time, who were part of those changes. The film is also served by the great dialogs of Lautner's accomplice, Michel Audiard. Only fluent French speaking spectators can really appreciate the movie because those dialogs are untranslatable and no subtitles will ever succeed to give their flavor.
