weekend: one of the few truly great political films

Weekend is one of the best movies I've ever seen, but it's also one of the most troubling. Its depth politically is, I believe, unmatched in cinema; Godard is truly a master, but this is, like a Sun Ra record, art for which you might need to be prepared.

By telling you to "be prepared," however, I don't mean to say you should go read up on film history. Sure, you'll miss a trick or two if you don't, but there's enough material to keep you very, very interested even if you're not a film student. Nor, in fact, should you even feel the need to read up on French history; it suffices to say that, to be very simplistic about it, as the U.S. was to Vietnam at the time, so France was to Algeria. Really, if you wanted to be ready for ALL the intellectual references and name-dropping, you ought to have a good classical education. That's hard to get, so I can't possibly suggest that...

What I do mean by "be prepared" is: be prepared for long shots that might not make sense, be prepared to consider your place in the world... be prepared to think about the movie while it's running. Hollywood encourages us to turn off our brains while we're watching a movie; Godard doesn't allow it. His film is intentionally aggravating and annoying at times, but Godard knows precisely what he's doing, and he manipulates the viewer expertly. (The infamous "car-jam scene" is to this day the most annoying and at the same time one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.) Be prepared to consider your place in society, society's place in the world, and the problems of those situations. Godard raises numerous incredibly important questions: what is the final fate of literature and the wealths of past generations handed down after political upheaval is finished with them? what is the point of any rhetoric-- communist or otherwise-- in a world of selfish, stupid bourgeois pigs (and, as anyone who's ever worked in fast food will tell you, this one is)? does art even have a purpose in a marketplace?

I personally disagree with those who claim that Weekend is dated and only interesting historically. The message is only obscured to us because the draft is no longer in full swing and because the entertainment industry has succeeded in lulling us into false security. We still have our Vietnams, though they may be secret; and, facts must be faced, most of us are still complete and total jerks, caring very little for the world around us and very much for our own pleasure. At the heart of Godard's movie is a deep and abiding love and compassion for humanity; the decadence of the world around us, however, forces the surface of the film to be cynical and hateful toward all the disgusting influences which keep us from being what we could be.

Ed Fury's best film!

THE SEVEN REVENGES might not be great art but as a Peplum, or a Sword & Sandal film, it rocks! A combination of action that's full of energy and excellent production design make this a fun 90 minutes to watch. Ed Fury stars as an Ivan the Terrible of sorts and it's easily his best performance of his career. He really sinks his teeth into his role. Sporting dark hair and a pencil-lined goatee, the friendly and happy go lucky Ed Fury we're usually accustomed to seeing is gone, certainly with the fact that his character is more anti-hero. What happens to Fury is also a tad surprising, considering his career relies on his boy next door good looks. The gorgeous Bella Cortez also stars. The sets and costumes are excellent, so much so that some scenes were re-used in other films like Hercules Prisoner of Evil. This film is totally forgotten and yet it's one of the better Peplums.

Love on a tour bus

Cute, fun movie of the adventures of European bus tour, and the developing romance of the driver (McCallum) and the Italian tour guide (Koscina). Nothing too deep, but a chance to enjoy bus load of likable people, and relish a burgeoning love affair between the leads. One of those movies that just leaves you feeling good, though with some bittersweet moments. I saw it only once (in 35mm), back in 1968, and still have fond memories. Silva Koscina was absolutely stunning; young McCallum gives a tender performance; and the Italian scenery is breathtaking.

Less gimmicky than Hollywood's "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium"

Deserves to be issued on DVD, especially considering the lesser films that are readily available these days.

Another good film from Inagaki

This film, starring Nakadai Tatsuya as Musashi and Onoe as Kojiro, is very visually driven. Throughout its long runtime, the film takes our strong-willed, and fickle Kojiro from his hometown, to Okinawa, through raids, festivals, and a final battle on a sandy beach.

The acting was fine. There is not much of Musashi in this movie, so if you are wishing only to see their climactic battles, look elsewhere in Inagaki's list of films. I was surprised many times at the turns and new developments within the film. Inagaki definitely took artistic liberty, as I have never heard of such things in Kojiro's life before-and I was fine with it. Inagaki did a great job.

The only problem I did have with the film involved some fight choreography. At the same time that some great stuff was coming out of Japan, fight-wise, this film was driven more by its plot. In that manner, the fights were a bit neglected.

I will most likely watch this film again. Many, many, many films around this time take place in inns, buildings, gray towns, or Shogunate offices, and this film was a great departure into the colorful.

The dreamlife of sailors

Take a look at the names of the people who made this film... Marguerite Duras, Jeanne Moreau, Vanessa Redgrave, Orson Wells, Umberto Orsini, Christopher Isherwood...

It seems almost surreal that the movie could be left for dead... Sure, it is no masterpiece but it is worth a lot more than the modern mass productions.... Psychology, feminine attraction, adventure, sailors, mystery... good ingredients. May be it could be a fantastic remake...

Review :

Mediocre Italian Western with Spaghetti all star cast and full of shots , action and fun

Acceptable but middling Western with typical Spaghetti actors as Gerge Hilton and Hunt Powers . A good example of Latino western genre from Italia . It deals with a nasty band under Jarret (Walter Barnes) , being formed by Santo ( Jack Betts or Hunt Powers) , his girlfriend (Sarah Ross) and other hoodlums (Rick Boyd , Salvatore Borghese , Mario Brega). Santo poses as a fake monk , including the San Bernardo's sculpture, to carry out the bank heist . They are wanted ¨Dead or alive¨ , north of the border . The gang arrives in Porland , a little town now dominated by Jarret and his underlings . After robbing they wait for an Indio who is supposed to lead them across the desert to Mexico . The false priest who has his own schemes murders Indio so that the outlaws can't leave the little town . They kill a good Sheriff (Enzo Fiermote) who is Billy's (George Hilton of Sartana series ) brother . Then Billy who is in prison hears his brother was murdered in a gun-down . Billy goes out to avenge his brother and breaks out from jail by a secret corridor to encounter brother's assassin . As Billy , helped by Mark (Jeff Cameron), seeks vengeance against Jarret , while his hoodlums kill , mistreat and harass townspeople . Two nasties attempt to rape a young girl (Katia Christine) but she is helped by Santo . At the end takes places a spectacular gun-down between Billy , Santo , both of whom join forces , against Jarret and his hoodlums .

Offbeat Spaghetti Western that follows the Sergio Leone wake , but it is also proceeded in American models . It's an exciting western with breathtaking gunfight between the protagonist George Hilton against the heartless Walter Barnes and his hoodlums . George Hilton and Jack Betts as starring couple are fine, they ravage the screen, shoot , hit and run and kill . This movie is a lot of fun to watch . It's an acceptable story with a touch of peculiarity, some likable characters, and an amazing music score . The picture is a tale of justice and revenge, as a man escapes after his prison and looks for vendetta . The basic plot is ordinary spaghetti western fare, but what makes this movie stand out is its style . atmospheric musical score by Luis Bacalov who subsequently won Academy Award for ¨The Postman and Pablo Neruda¨, but here he rips off from Ennio Morricone's Once upon a time in America¨ . Badly photographed , the picture deserves a necessary remastering , as the film-copy is worn-out . Appears as secondaries the habitual in Italian Western such as Rick Boyd , Luciano Rossi, Bento Stefanelli, Umberto Raho ; Mario Brega , Sergio Leone's customary , and the always sympathetic Salvatore Borghese ; furthermore a Eurotrash Goddess as Erika Blanc as Saloon girl. The film packs violence , shootouts , high body-count and it's fast moving and quite entertaining . There is plenty of action in the movie , guaranteeing some shoot'em up , cat-fights between Sarah Ross and Erika Blanc , brawls or stunts every few minutes. There is a very odd implementation of shots in the camera work during some particular scenes as the film approaches its climax , as in the final gunfights full of shots and explosions and of course lots of zooms . The movie gets the usual Western issues, such as avengers antiheroes , violent facing off , exaggerated baddies , soundtrack with Morricone influence , among them . The sense of pacing is such that his film can be counted on to move quickly and smoothly . Good production design creating an excellent scenario with luminous outdoors, dirty and rocky landscapes under a glimmer sun and fine sets . Interior scenes filmed in Italy , Elios Studios and outdoor sequences with barren exteriors filmed in Almeria , Spain , as usual . This motion picture is professionally directed by Maurizio Luzidi . Although Maurizo couldn't be deemed an "A"-list director, his movies had a professionalism and a verve that many of those made by his fellow B directors lacked . He was a fine editor and also filmed detective thrillers , Giallo , comedy and even a horror film or two . He directed two Western more as ¨Saddle tramps¨ with Bud Spencer and ¨Pecos¨ with Robert Woods , and even made films with international cast as ¨Sweet people¨ with Roger Moore and Stacy Keach and ¨The last chance¨ with Elli Wallach and Ursula Andress . His greatest conquest was the edition of ¨Don Quijote¨ by Orson Welles . Rating : 5,5 . Acceptable , passable but average .
