Unknown but very adequate Italian crime/thriller

Since this is the very first user-comment submitted for "Date for a Murder", I was really hoping to enlighten all you readers about another totally forgotten and fascinating Italian cult film from the late 60's! Sadly, it didn't turn out to be the undiscovered gem that I was desiring to see (with the recent popularity towards for Italian cinema, I assume all the greatest films have already been identified), yet it's nonetheless an interesting crime/thriller with some raw action sequences and a fairly compelling plot. Two American friends coincidentally meet each other in the Italian countryside and agree to get back together again a couple of days later in Rome, after they both settled some private affairs. When one of them doesn't show up, the other one gets concerned and fears that something suspicious happened. He investigates the case himself and it doesn't take long before he's entangled in a network of industrial espionage, blackmail and even cold-blooded murder. The story, especially towards the finale, is rather predictable and the obligatory love-story is completely pointless. The heroic duo (the American and a local police commissioner) are likable characters and all the villains look effectively menacing, most notably the creepy guy in motorized wheelchair! To finish up, the film contains several beautiful images of Rome, the soundtrack is exciting and the action scenes (on rooftops, on remote highways, in dark alleys, ...) are well choreographed. "Date for a Murder" was written by Fernando Di Leo – who's really an expert in the genre – but perhaps it also needed a famous and experienced director to make it more memorable. Someone like Umerto Lenzi ("Violent Naples", "Almost Human"), Ruggero Deodato ("Live like a Cop, die like a Man") or Enzo G. Castellari ("Street Law", "The Big Rocket").

In 1922 New York City, Millie Dillmount and Miss Dorothy Brown are just two of the girls living at the Priscilla Hotel for Single Young Ladies run by Mrs. Meers. Orphaned, Miss Dorothy, just recently arrived, is a naive, old-fashioned girl from a seemingly privileged background who has aspirations to be a stage actress. From more modest means, Millie, in New York for three months, used to be old fashioned, but now has a new modern sensibility and look to match, complete with bobbed hair and dresses with hemlines above the knee. Included in this new modern sensibility is Millie's goal of getting a job as a stenographer, with a quick promotion to being her wealthy boss' "Mrs.". Love is not to factor into the equation. She believes she's found the right employer in the form of chisel-jawed Trevor Graydon of the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. Millie's pursuit of Mr. Graydon is despite the fact that Mr. Graydon sees her as one of the boys, he has old fashioned sensibilities, and Millie ...

A Showcase for Julie

Hard for me to be objective, here, since I've been madly in love with Julie Andrews since being first exposed to her crystalline voice when I was three.

But I'll try: "Millie's" first half is, to quote the screenplay, "Delish," with Andrews vamping and camping throughout. I am unable to take my eyes off her as she clowns, flirts, cavorts, and also sings and dances (getting her hotel elevator to work results in a showstopper). The vehicle--a pastiche of 1920s conventions (including "moderns") and filmgoing techniques (including iris-outs and title cards)--is the frothy light story of a British import who comes to America and finds true love.

The second half gets bogged down in the overwrought script, with all the machinations of a white slavery plot and a pair of "inscrutible" Orientals who, in this day and age of racial sensitivity, get far worse than they deserve.

Some history: Ross Hunter, the producer, wanted to film "The Boy Friend," the Broadway musical that had introduced Andrews to the U.S. stage. When the rights were unavailable, he devised his own script, using the same setting--the 1920s. A "small" musical evolved.

Then Julie's star went through the stratosphere. And the Universal "suits," smelling another payday, insisted that the movie be a road-show presentation--with a road-show running time(and at which road-show prices could be charged). Little "Millie" had an intermission added, and her running time was increased considerably.

The movie's still a lot of fun and definitely recommendable (especially to Andrews fans), but let's just say that, at times, it more than shows its stretchmarks!

Dull beyond belief!

I am a fan of bad horror films of the 1950s and 60s--films so ridiculous and silly that they are good for a laugh. So, because of this it's natural that I'd choose this film--especially because with John Agar in it, it was practically guaranteed to be bad. Sadly, while it was a bad film, it was the worst type of bad film--dull beyond belief and unfunny. At least with stupid and over-the-top bad films, you can laugh at the atrocious monsters and terrible direction and acting. Here, you never really see that much of the monster (mostly due to the darkness of the print) and the acting, while bad, is more low energy bad...listless and dull.

The film begins with some young adults going to Satan's Hollow to neck. Well, considering the name of the place, it's not surprising when they are later found chewed to pieces! Duh...don't go necking at Satan's Hollow!! Well, there are reports of some sort of crashing object from the sky, so what do the teens go? Yep, throw a dance party--a very, very, very slow dance party where the kids almost dance in slow motion. So it's up to the Sheriff (Agar) and his men to ensure that the teens can dance in peace without fear of mastication.

As for the monster, it's some guy in a gorilla suit with a silly mask--a bit like the monster in ROBOT MONSTER. Not exactly original and not exactly high tech. To make it worse, it makes snorting noises and moves very, very slowly--so slow that even the most corpulent teen could easily outrun it! How it manages to kill repeatedly is beyond me.

Overall, too dull to like--even if you are a fan of lousy cinema.

Cronin Mitchell is an average guy whose face is disfigured by a falling electrical power line in which he somehow acquires the gift/curse of strange psychic powers. After withdrawing from public life, 'Mitch' makes a living as a fortune teller when he's approached by an ugly hag who offers to restore his good looks if he becomes her lover. Mitch reluctantly agrees, and although his face is restored, people around him see his lover as an attractive young woman named Ellen. When news of Mitch's psychic powers leak out, he goes on the road with Ellen from city to city and town to town helping people solve crimes. After expelling a ghost from a funeral home, Mitch and Ellen are sent to a small Illinois town to find the identity of a serial killer. But the government sends along a crackpot psychiatrist/playboy, named Dr. Alex Jordan, to oversee the case and possibly debunk Mitch's psychic abilities. A film that lives up to its title

H.G. Lewis has made some bizarre films, but none more bizarre than this one. Yep, its even more out there than "The Wizard of Gore". Its certainly not his most entertaining film and definitely not the best starting place for this unique exploitation filmmaker, but the occasional bits of camp surrealism that prefigured his other films is on full drive here. Its not a gore picture or one of his sexploitation films. In fact, there's really nothing here that would get anything more than a PG rating from the MPAA, outside of maybe the LSD sequence. Still, its truly something weird. And yes, the single greatest video company ever did take their name and logo from this.

As usual with H.G. Lewis films, its really poorly made. Lewis was a great showman but never an accomplished director, and just like most of his films this often drags. The acting alternates between being wooden and over-the-top, the "logic" none existent, and when viewed on close inspection, the reasoning behind the characters actions becomes almost surreal. Still, no one goes into these films expecting Orson Welles, and this delivers plenty of cheap thrills. The fact that its also so damn bizarre makes it even better. Plus, Elizabeth Lee is possibly the best looking actress ever in a Lewis film, which is saying a good deal. The more I see of these acid exploitation films, the more I can't get enough of them. Extremely silly but extremely likable movie.

This is one funky crime-thriller, or Krimi, since it's a German movie after all.

This movie and it's story are both being quite silly. It's really a product of the '60's and it does nothing to conceal this. It's a type of movie Austin Powers used to make fun of. It has silly weapons (a gun that sprays gas, a bible that kills), a stupid evil criminal plot, people who do silly and unlikely things in general, silly James Bond like villains, that live in a lair with crocodiles and other sea animals surrounding the villain, who sits with his back to the camera in a chair and who we can only hear speak. This really seems like the German answer to James Bond's growing popularity. But luckily the movie also doesn't take itself very serious. It has fun, almost quirky like characters and some good comic relief as well, from time to time.

The movie is being based on a Edgar Wallace novel, that were quite popular, not in the very least because Edgar Wallace was also the author of King Kong. A whole series of movies got made of his books. The books were actually a lot older than the movies, so it's hard to say how much of the silliness actually comes from the books themselves. Probably very little and the books in essence were mostly being serious crime-thrillers, with always a mysterious villain, that inspector Higgins had to unmask.

The movie is just basically a whole lot of fun. The villains, the silly plot, all of the other characters, it's funky '60's style and atmosphere, all make this a very likable movie. This really is the movie its strongest point, since if you have to look at this movie deeper and more serious you really can't call this movie a good one at all. The story and storytelling is far from likely or well done, so overall you can really call this movie a bad one, if you look at it very strictly. But luckily nobody will be able to, due to the funky silliness of this movie. Everybody will probably get taken by it and will enjoy this movie because of that.

A great guilty pleasure movie.

Exotic and funny

Apart from the dreadful south American dubbing of my DVD I must admit that PECOS CLEANS UP (AKA Pecos and the treasure of Moctezuma) is a good way to spend 90 minutes, if you are into Spaghetti westerns this one is a exotic rarity that you don't want to miss.

Imagine the only descendant of Moctezuma who rules a gang of ruthless bandits and lives inside an Aztec pyramid craved on a lost canyon, that's the villain...now imagine that the lost gold of Moctezuma is somewhere in a cave and our hero (and three mariachis) are the only ones who knows where to find the treasure, there's also a map and a bunch of soldiers...strange story for a western? sure, but it works fine and is also a movie for the entire family, not much violence, total absence of sex, some funny jokes and bloodless shootouts make the movie suitable for kids and probably they will enjoy it a lot.

Good for a matinée.

Rankin/Bass's Halloween (Trick-or-) Treat

Another super retro puppet-animated feature from Rankin/Bass. This full-length feature film is one of only two specials done by R/B with a Halloween theme - the other being "Mad Mad Mad Monsters" (which is a shorter version of this same story done in inferior cel animation).

When Dr. Baron Von Frankenstein decides to retire from his long career as the head of the monster society, he invites all of his creations - Frankenstein, The Mummy, Count Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man and many others - for one final bash before handing down his position to his successor which each of the monsters assume will be themselves. When the true successor is revealed as the Baron's long-lost nephew, a nerdy boy named Felix Flankin, all hell breaks loose and poor Felix is in big trouble!!

The characters are really top-notch thanks to a winning combination of exquisitely designed stop-motion puppets and and excellent voices provided by some big-name stars. Boris Karlof adds his eerie sound as the Baron, Phyllis Diller is an ingenious choice as the Monster's Mate, and Gale Garnett takes the cake as the most memorable character, Francesca, a curvy, buxom, husky-voiced sexy red-head with a mind just as sinister as the ghastliest of the monsters.

Featuring a fantastic jazzy, spy-groovy soundtrack and creepy set designs, this campy film creates a genuine 60's Halloween feeling. The jokes that adults will find humorous will fly right over children's heads, which will be too mesmerized by all the cool monsters to notice much else.
