One of the greatest films ever

If there is one thing to be said about this film, it is excellent in every detail - story, direction, cinematography, music, action, I could go on and on. There are few film makers who can turn a simple tale of feudal injustice into such a moving drama.

As the movie progresses, Toshiro Mifune's character slowly transforms into an epic hero - for his sense of honour and his love for his Son for which he is ready to defy his own honour-bound Samurai's oath, to rebel against the very world he lives in. The heroism and integrity of his sacrifice are presented in exquisite detail with poignant dialogue (even in subtitles). This in itself is an amazing achievement when the compared to the trend nowadays is to try to impress the viewer with visual trickery or mind-numbing fight sequences with excessive violence.

I truly appreciate Masaki Kobayashi for the respect he shows to his viewer's intelligence, for intelligently presenting the true heroism of a human standing up against impossible odds.As an exercise, you may compare this movie with the over-budgeted disaster of a Hollywood movie called "The Last Samurai" to know what I am talking about. With an excellent story and great characters with potential for true heroism, "The Last Samurai" is one of the dumbest movies ever made.

This is also no dumb "You killed my master so I will kill you" Hong Kong movie or a "Lone Wolf" movie with it's absurd and senseless blood-spilling. All of you Action movie fans, this is also not a beat-each-other-to-pulp or chop-you-up-like-a-fish movie.

The fight sequences are excellently executed and are almost the best that I have seen so far (The fight sequences in Harakiri must be THE BEST ever). The character of Tatsuya Nakadai is interesting as well in that it is not really clear what his true intentions are - he seems torn between his selfish desire to better Mifune's character in a duel bound up with his loyalty to his clan against his honour as a friend. Warning: So watch it if you enjoy an excellently told social drama and you will see what makes a masterly piece of art.

A well acted film about a family story with superb performance by Padmini

If you would like to see a Hindi movie where Pran is not a villain and Padmini does not have a dance sequence, go an enjoy this two and a half hour long Gemini family drama with some excellent piece of acting by Padmini, Pran and young and up coming Rajesh Khanna. This is a story of Parvati ( Padmini ) who is the sole bread winner of six siblings including a grown up Suresh ( Rajesh Khanna ) who she is determined to support his higher education with her humble income working as a household maid for a very compassionate family. The movie is all about Parvati played magnificently by Padmini who has demonstrated her acting skills as a loving elder sister of her siblings, a wife devoted to her husband Manharilal ( Pran ) inspite of his animal like instincts and also providing a motherly love of her husband's children. Also Rajesh Khanna, Nazima ( as Asha) and Lalita Pawar provided good acting in their support roles. The song sequence in the river was very well depicted with some excellent photography. The music is commendable and has some melodious numbers. Overall it is an enjoyable movie about a woman's struggle to survive in this world with special focus on how far a family can go to support higher education to make a meaningful life for one of their members.

Review :

Yusupov in the flesh

THis movie -which may or may not be admired by S.Spielberg- has a not inconsiderable advantage over the other versions of this well-known (who said hackneyed?) story. At the beginning, before the credits, the real murderer appears for an interview. His wife Irina also contributes. There's a very fascinating moment:when he finally stops talking, the prince lifts his spectacles, and on with the show!

Unfortunately, what follows does not rise to the occasion. There's a very good cast(Peter McEnnery ,today forgotten,Hossein himself,G.Chaplin fresh from Dr. Zhivago ,and Gert -Goldfinger- Froebe as Rasputin),but the screenplay is self-conscious and eludes the most interesting details:Yusupov used to dress up as a woman, his relationship with Dimitri-played by Hossein who was too old for the part otherwise- was very odd,to say the least, and all this remains backstage.

The best part is the last third which is given a horror film treatment, often efficient and impressive, thanks to Froebe's sensational and bestial rendering.A beautiful cinematography and a nice score are also assets.

Yusupov died several months after his stint was filmed. The main reason for which Hossein was very anxious to have him on his side,is that,in the thirties,Yusupov sued Hollywood (and won a lot of money)because he thought one of the early versions of the story was slanderous.

I would like to reveal more interesting points and a rectification concerning Robert Hossein's 1967 movie.First of all,Hossein does not play Dimitri,as I said, but Serge Shoukotine.Dimitri's character is only a walk on,having barely one line or two to say.The reason can be found,as I said, in the fact that the relationship Dimitri/Yusupov was dubious.(Hossein made veiled hints when he shows the two men dancing together, and when Irina leaves for Crimea)

It's interesting to note that Irina,Yusupov's wife ,who was the tzar's niece,is played by Ira Von Furstenberg,an authentic princess who made a lot of movies in the seventies, mainly in Italy. The beautiful score was composed by Hossein's father André.This was not a big budget production, and yet Hossein succeeds in bringing on the screen the magnificence of Russian aristocracy before the revolution.Henri Persin's sumptuous cinematography creates an entrancing atmosphere:a splendid shot shows Chaplin and Mc Ennery, seen from a distance in a forest, going near the camera slowly.

What's definitely lacking is vigor ,and a dramatic progression. The relationship Rasputin/Yusupov ,which is the core of the film, does not work that much well.It looks as if we're going sightseeing in Russia. Outside Gert Froebe, the stand out is Geraldine Chaplin ,who portrays a naive young girl, beguiled by the monk. But McEnnery's performance is too static and

not on a par with his enemy's.The political situation is a pale backdrop(and yet, there's the war and a revolution is just round the corner!)

If you intend to watch this movie,do not miss the first five minutes, which have become an authentic historical document cause Yusupov died in 1968 and his wife followed him to the grave two years later:trying to rescue a cat on a roof during a wintry night, she caught cold and died from pneumonia.

About time to go!!

In 1967,Michèle Mercier told the "Paris Match "journalists that there would be more Angéliques after this one.She said that ,at the end of this oriental saga, the heroine would be arrested by Desgrez, the King's favorite cop,and that poor Joffrey would have nothing to do but sail away...

But,it was not to be.Bernard Borderie filmed the last two episodes ("Indomptable Angélique and" Angélique et le sultan" which are actually adapted from the same book ,the title of which is that of the former)together ,then divided his footage into two parts, making the first film some kind of trailer for "Angélique et le sultan"which is not a good movie for all that.Far from Golon's brilliant depictions,it often gets ridiculous.French Jean-Claude Pascal as an educated eunuch is guaranteed to net nothing but horse-laugh.the dialogue follows suit:Angélique to the sultan during the fatal Night :"But,here, you do not want to rape me,do you?"

The Angelique film saga thus stopped here, whereas there are thirteen books in all.No actress tried to take on the character. They used to talk ,in the nineties, about a TV series. Then Robert Hossein took the first book to the stage in the mid-nineties,taking on his former part of Peyrac .But Angelique's fans (of the books!)are still waiting for a strong adaptation of Anne et Serge Golon"s magnificent books, easily the best historical adventures since Alexandre Dumas. In France, their names are slowly fading, but in Canada, they retain a cult of followers.More power to them.

NB:There is a Turkish version of the book:"Angelique in the Ottoman palaces".I've never seen it.

Wonderful suspense thriller with beautiful songs

The movie starts with an ordinary love story of a girl with a military man, they marry without telling the girl's father. The girl's father somehow agrees and asks them to do the marriage again. War breaks out and the husband dies in the war leaving the girl pregnant. Father of girl tells the girl that the child was born dead. The girl marries a stage actor Kumar, played by Sunil Dutt. First half is full of good songs, and beautiful surroundings of Darjeeling. No one can even imagine what the second half can be. The second half is suspense thriller, young Sunil Dutt plays the role of chasing husband very well. Balraj Sahni is, as always, at the top of the affairs, as a police inspector. Balraj Sahni's styles eventually suggest that probably Amitabh copies him a lot of times. Suspense goes on till the last 7-8 minutes of the movie. Raaj Kumar is not so good, but Dutt sahib has done phenomenally well. A must watch movie. I still remember when I was a child I saw this movie first time on Vishal cinema in New Delhi, and my father when I told him that I saw Humraaz, he embraced me. Its a far far better movie than today's suspense thrillers.

Review :

the most irreverent Italian satire you've never seen, this is one of Pasolini's very best

How I love a film that taps into the absurd while staying true to the symbolism, and in the process mocking it and then creating symbolism again. It's a very tricky thing- Bunuel was one of the masters at it- and Pier Paolo Pasolini, in one of his rare outright comedies, does just that. The Hawks and the Sparrows is simple enough to explain, in its central conceit: an older man (Toto) and a younger man (Ninetto) are walking along on some not-totally-clear journey (Toto might have some debts to fix or something, and he has apparently eighteen children), and they meet a talking crow, who talks and talks a lot. Then they get into some strange happenings, all comical. But it's the kind of comedy then that Pasolini uses like some deranged poetic waxing on about silent comedy and theories on God and faith and love and politics and, uh, stomach cramps I guess. It's completely off the wall, at times like a roadrunner cartoon (or, for that matter, the best Buster Keaton), and it's told with a dedication to the comic situation. It's masterful.

At times it doesn't seem that way though. It could, in less concerted hands, be more scatter-shot, with some scenes working better than others, and with the one sure bet being the crow (voiced by a great Francesco Leonetti). But from the start, Paoslini is completely confident with the material, from the opening titles that are sung (heh), with the throw-away scene with the kids dancing at the restaurant (with an amazing Ennio Morricone rock song that pops in and out of the film), to the sudden inter-titles ala Monty Python ("the crow is a "left-wing intellectual"), and then onward with the little stories within the framework of the 'road movie'. The biggest chunk Pasolini shows us is the story of two monks- also played by Toto and Davoli- who are instructed by their head monk to talk to the hawks and sparrows and teach them about God. And they do, in bird speak (which is also subtitled in case it's needed), and then go through an allegorical tale of the ins and outs of faith.

It takes some wicked subversion to make these scenes work, but they work hilariously, to the point where I laughed almost every minute of the sequence (as well as with other ones, the exception being the archival clips late in the film of the protest marches). Pasolini once said he was "as unbeliever who has a nostalgia for belief", imbues the story of the monks with a sense of charm to it- you like Toto and Davoli in the parts, not even so much that they're good in the roles, which they are very much so, but because there's some bedrock that the satire can spring from so easily. He, via the exceptional Tonino Delli Colli, films the Hawks and the Sparrows as strong in sumptuous black and white as any of his other early-mid 60s films. But there's a lot more going on within the comedy; it's like he skims a line that he could make it as, like with some of his other work (unfortunately ala Teorema) pretentious and annoyingly trite in its intellectual points. But as he goes to lengths to put a spin on it, it turns into pitch-black comedy, revealing him as an even deeper artist because of it.

Take the birth scene, where the weird theater-type troupe who drive around in a car have to pause in their play on "How the Romans Ruined the Earth", and it suddenly becomes a sly farce unto itself. Something that should be sacred is given the air of playfulness, as though everyone is told "yes, it's alright to be in on the joke", where Toto covers Ninetto's eyes, other actors in the group pray, and then walla, there's a baby, clean as day. Morricone's score, I might add, brings a lot to this air of fun and playfulness, even when (and rightfully so) it goes to the more typical strings and orchestral sounds than the rockabilly, which sounds more like unused bits from Pulp Fiction. And finally, there's the crow itself, which unto itself- had Pasolini not made it mockable- would be funny anyway, as it's a frigging talking crow who for some reason follows the men anywhere they go. It's already allegorical of a sort of guide or voice of reason on their journey, which is fine. But including the ending especially, Pasolini allows for the joke to flip over itself.

With the Hawks and the Sparrows, we get the absurd and the surreal, placed wonderfully in social constructs, and it reveals a filmmaker who can, unlike but like his controversial reputation presents, open up a whole other perspective with a strange twist that mixes classic Italian film style and scathing subject matter. A+

A Well Scripted Detective Story With Panache

This film was based upon the highly regarded "Peter Gunn" television series that ran from 1958 to 61. Running for five seasons to the unforgettable title theme and background music of early Henry Mancini, the show set a standard for script writing that proved, beyond doubt, television writing need not be the 'medium of 'hacks': even within the limits of a thirty minute format interrupted by commercials. This big screen treatment starring, once again, Craig Stevens as the suave, indomitable Gunn, failed at the box office, more a casualty of the changing times than the writing and acting-both of which were superb. Unfortunately this cinematic outing in color dimmed slightly in comparison to the television series that was shot, quite effectively, in a film noir format reminiscent of detective films of the 40's. Regardless, the crisp story line and plot is intriguing from beginning to end, with the intentional humor never once tripping over the drama (credit writer William Peter Blatey). I must admit, however, I truly missed two key characters from the original series played by Herschel Bernardi and Lola Albright: their replacements were nowhere near as effective. Nevertheless, the performance of Craig Stevens must be credited for recapturing the intellectually glib character of the title character,Peter Gunn: the thinking man's 'gumshoe'. This film deserves to be seen by all those who love a really good detective story.

Under-rated Hitchcock gem.

This hardly ever appears in the lists of the master's best films, but it is a real gem - superbly acted, inventively filmed with great music, dialogue and plot. Julie Andrews and Paul Newman work really well together - a very sexy scene early in the film is a delight, filmed in extreme close-up. And Lila Kedrova's cameo is Oscar worthy. This is also a memorable look at the Cold War at its height, and although the pro-West propaganda is a little thick at times, there is still a sense of the absurdity of the situation. And there is a murder scene of unbelievable savagery that really left me shaken - excellent work here from Newman and Carolyn Conwell. The most memorable scene is the bus pursuit sequence, and the theatre audience turning into an hysterical mob when Newman yells "fire" is a great Hitchcock moment. One of his best cameo appearances too. I think this film deserves re-examination.

This comment will self destruct in five sentences

The Russian Premier is presented with a British bulldog, who has been fitted with a transmitter (Operation Bandy Legs) by Dr. Francis Trevelyan (Laurence Harvey). The red comrade conveniently takes the dog everywhere (even the opera) and before long 200 Russian agents working in England have been captured. To plug this leak, the Ruskies put Princess (?) Natasha Romanova (Daliah Lavi) on the case. She makes mild mannered Stanley Farquhar (Lionel Jeffries) biggest dream come true: a naked lady waiting when he enters his hotel room. For reasons impossible to dispose here (it could trigger international chaos), the chip must be removed again and only Trevelyan (third best dressed man in the whole world three years running), can do it.

Although the pre-credit sequence and the order of billing would make you believe Harvey, as the ladies man veterinarian, is the lead, he only appears sporadically during the first half of the film. It is Golden Globe nominee Jeffries who carries the picture as the low key counter intelligence agent ridiculed by his wife and children. Daliah Lavi has but a few scenes scattered throughout, but does get to show off some incredible sixties outfits and underwear. Denholm Elliott is wasted as usual, and Erik Sykes plays the kind of stupid assistant who would make Peter Sellers blush.

For a spy spoof there is little action, just some people trying to lure the dog with the help of a mate. It also seems like every character has a funny but difficult to remember surname (or a silly codename). A couple of meaningless references to popular culture immediately fall flat, and the old Get Smart cone of silence (or Sound Proof Bubble as it is called here) is dragged out again for all it's worth. This does provide one amusing bit when Trevelyan loses the only thing he has going for him: the most stuck up British accent ever committed to film.

Stratum habits, politics, psychological gradients, (well targeted), come in foreground from a humouresque-metaphysical scenario. A must-see, in my opinion.

Thumbing a ride to Earth.

It's 1990 and earth has finally made its first contact with extraterrestrials on Mars. Which they have told earth through radio waves that they actually plan to visit earth. Although something goes wrong in their attempt and an expedition is sent to Mars to find any survivors. In which case they discover a green skinned lady. "Planet of Blood" is a cheap little hybrid picture by director / writer Curtis Harrington. He turns in one very solid Sci-fi / horror yarn which is held together by capable performances from John Saxon and Dennis Hopper and some strikingly eerie visuals that go a long way in plastering the film with an atmospherically moody embrace. The haunting story is quite languid, but keeps things rather firm and planted throughout the material are a few surprises and neat touches. The astute plot is quite original and has a variation that would go on to influence (with such others like "It! The Terror From Beyond Space" and Bava's "Planet of the Vampires") the masterpiece "Alien". Some might find the pacing quite slow going and a jargon packed script terribly chatty, but I found it more often interesting with the questions that are raised than boring. If action and mayhem is what you want, it doesn't really kick into gear until the final 30 minutes, where it ends on a surprising final note.

The production looks quite colourful with suited special effects (from a Russian sci-fi flick) that simply does the job. Visually, there are some wondrous lighting compositions and cardboard sets sprayed with a vibrant colour scheme. An otherworldly music score builds up some rustling tunes that rattle along. Harrington's direction is commendably focused and stylishly tailored. Performances are good with the likes of Basil Rathbone, Judi Merdith and Florence Marley as the mysteriously hypnotic and silent alien woman. Watch out for her "Look into my eyes" sequences. John Saxon chimes in with his usual impressive performance and a young Dennis Hopper is sound. Also Forrest J. Ackerman makes a minor mark in the last minute of the flick.

For it's budget, it's a well-presented and exceedingly slow burn premise with a sterling cast.

multiple roles in old Cuba

"Las aventuras de Juan Quin Quin" focuses on a man (Julio Martínez) who takes on numerous personae, among them a bullfighter and a sacristan, in what appears to be pre-revolutionary Cuba. I assume that the movie is looking at the conditions that led to the revolution, but the whole thing is pretty vague. I don't know of any other movies that Julio García Espinosa directed -- although I assume that he directed more -- but a movie that I recommend that focuses on the conditions that led to the revolution is Mikhail Kalatozov's Soviet-Cuban co-production "I Am Cuba". Other Cuban movies that I recommend include "The Last Supper", "A Successful Man", "Strawberry and Chocolate" and "Nada". I hope to see the upcoming "Habanastation".

"2001" is a story of evolution. Sometime in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon's surface, where yet another monolith is found, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers (HAL) and human (Bowman) to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be.

Greatest Movie of All Time

Instead of writing a paragraph, I'll give four good reasons why 2001 is the greatest cinema experience of all time:

1) It is a visual Odyssey that could only be told on the big screen. The special effects that won Kubrick his only Oscar are the most stunning effects before that age of Jurassic Park and T2. They allow Kubrick to give an accurate (or at least are the most accurate) depiction of space travel to date. The silence that fills the space scenes not only serves its purpose as accurate science, but also adds to the mood of the film (to be discussed in a later point with HAL). The fact that Kubrick shot the moon scenes before the Apollo landing is a gutsy yet fulfilling move. Many have said that upon its original release, it was a favorite "trip" movie. I can think of no other movie that has such amazing visuals for its time and even of all time (sorry Phantom Menace fans!)

2) Kubrick's directing style is terrific. As in all his films, Kubrick likes to use his camera as means to delve into the psychology of his characters and plots. His camera is not as mobile as other greats, such as Scorsese, but instead sits and watches the narrative unfold. Faces are the key element of a Kubrick film. Like classic movies, such as M and Touch of Evil, Kubrick focuses on the characters' faces to give the audience a psychological view-point. Even he uses extreme close-ups of HAL's glowing red "eye" to show the coldness and determination of the computerizd villain. I could go on, but in summation Kubrick is at the hieght of his style.

3) HAL 9000 is one of the most villainous characters in film history. I whole-heartedly agree with the late Gene Siskle's opinion of HAL 9000. Most of this film takes place in space. Through the use of silence and the darkness of space itself, a mood of isolation is created. Dave and his crewmen are isolated between earth and jupiter, with nowhere to escape. Combine this mood with the cold, calculated actions of HAL 9000 and you have the most fearful villain imaginable. I still, although having see this film several times, feel my chest tighten in a particular scene.

4) The controversial ending of 2001 always turns people away from this film. Instead of trying to give my opinion of the what it means and what my idea of 2001's meaning in general is, I'd like to discuss the fact that the ending serves to leave the movie open-ended. Kubrick has stated that he inteded to make 2001 open for discussion. He left its meaning in the hands of the viewer. By respecting the audience's intelligence, Kubrick allowed his movie to be the beginning, not the end, of a meaningful discussion on man's past, present, and future. The beauty of 2001 is that the ending need not mean anything deep, it can just be a purely plot driven explanation and the entire movie can be viewed as an entertaining journey through space. No other movie, save the great Citizen Kane, leaves itself open to discussion like 2001. It is truly meant to be a surreal journey that involves not only the eye but the mind. Instead of waiting in long lines for the Phantom Menace, rent a widescreen edition of 2001 and enjoy the greatest cinematic experience.

Odd

Quizzical and somewhat painful Argentinean softcore porn flick has the good quality of being one of the few competent unions of exploitation with mainstream genre film. In this case, sci-fi, and see _Flesh Gordon_ if you have any doubts about how difficult a genre fusion of this kind can be. The movie drags at times, but at others is fabulously bizarre, probably because of the tortured logic Vieyra has to use to establish the (relatively) intricate plot without compromising the explicit scenes. Humpp's legendary sequence -- a weird, mutated critter playing an unidentifiable lutish instrument while people mill about a foggy courtyard -- is strange beyond description.
