A pretty weird world indeed
"The Weird World of LSD" is, as another reviewer noted, the 60s equivalent of "Reefer Madness" and all those other 30s drug exploitation flicks. Its just as wildly misinformed and absolutely hilarious. Apparently, dropping acid leads to stripteases, cat fights, promiscuous sex, playing with kittens, and being convinced your dinner is much larger than it actually is. This is all illustrated in a series of silent sketches accompanied by a droll narrator who seems positively doped out of his mind. The film is a completely inaccurate depiction of the drug, but its pretty trippy in its own right.
As you probably have picked up by this point, the film wasn't made as a serious educational warning. Its "social conscience" is merely an excuse to pile on the tame by todays standards luridness. This makes the film all the more puzzling, because you could get away with sexual content in indie films at this time without the message, unlike in the 30s. This combined with the fact that no actual nudity is shown just makes this all the more puzzling. Interestingly enough, it actually makes me wish I still did hallucinogenic drugs, so I could enjoy this to its fullest potential. "The Weird World of LSD" is an absolutely horrible film technically, but I certainly was never bored. Something Weird really needs to unleash this onto DVD soon! (6/10)
