Great movie which deserves to be available in DVD asap -NOW!

Great movie which deserves to be available in DVD asap, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Brit is probably the best looking blonde on the planet. This movie is unusual in that it has two levels of humor at least. Each viewing reveals more details and cultural humor regarding the "foreign" viewpoint. The Flamenco Dancer is great - she beats those on Collins Street hands down - in my opinion. This movie used to be shown on Television and was often listed locally as "The Blue Matador". The Scenery appears to be authentic, as opposed to being shot primarily in a studio. The color is excellent as is the focus of the VHS version. Very sharp and very clear photography. And it is a movie which can be viewed alone or in a group. The entire movie is UPBEAT.

Masterpiece

This masterful, beautiful picture by the underknown and underrated Cornel Wilde is a haunting look at the combat experience. Depending on one's point of view, Terrence Malick either paid tribute to it or blatantly copied it in THE THIN RED LINE (1998). The movies are amazingly similar in the way they use flashbacks and voiceover narration (as characters' thoughts spoken aloud) to immerse the audience in the characters as they fight. I love both movies -- Malick's has things going for it that Wilde's doesn't, such as a physical beauty and a superb score -- but BEACH RED is in some ways the more powerful of the two. It's even more immediate. The voiceovers are less forced and don't really go into the philosophizing that the voiceovers in THIN RED LINE do. The effect is to keep the audience more focused on the combat itself. In short, BEACH RED is more emotional (whereas THIN RED LINE is emotional AND philosophical/metaphorical).

The way this movie opens with 30 minutes of pure combat on a beach is also similar to SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. In fact, BEACH RED is something of a combination of that movie and THIN RED LINE. Spielberg and Malick surely must both have studied this picture carefully. The last 5 minutes of BEACH RED comprise one of the most haunting and powerful statements on combat I have ever seen. This is a movie that will leave you thinking for a long time.

Engineer Mark Thackeray arrives to teach a totally undisciplined class at an East End school. Still hoping for a good engineering job, he's hopeful that he won't be there long. He starts implementing his own brand of classroom discipline: forcing the pupils to treat each other with respect. Inevitably he begins getting involved in the students' personal lives, and must avoid the advances of an amorous student while winning over the class tough. What will he decide when the engineering job comes through?

Great, landmark teacher-student relationship film

The school movie against which all other school movies are measured. Sidney Poitier was on a roll in 1966-67(A PATCH OF BLUE, GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT)and TO SIR, WITH LOVE crowned that succession of great films. Poitier's Thackery is meticulous and elegant, something of a revelation to the unwashed juvenile deliquents and teen sluts who populate his class. Yet this unemployed engineer has his work cut out for him, as his motley crew will try just about anything(including burning tampons in the classroom stove!)to run him off. Instead of exploding like the kids wish, Thackery takes a different tack; treating them like adults and talking about things they have questions about. The ploy works, and along the way Thackery learns to deal with indifferent fellow teachers, racism, lovestruck female students, and a hard decision that will determine his future . . . A great inspirational movie, TO SIR, WITH LOVE also boasts British songstress Lulu in her first film role, as well as prominent soundtrack artist(The Mindbenders are the others). The process by which Thackery molds these wild, rebellious teens into mature and thoughtful adults--and the teens' resulting respect for Thackery, quite possibly the first respect they've ever felt for an adult--is touching. Definitely a classic film worth seeing.

Competent Italian War Actioner

The king of average, mediocre Italian action movies, Alfonso Brescia, does his best work in this action-packed, anti-war commando story, released in 1967. "Hell in Normandy" may not be the best of a slew of Italian "commando" movies, but it's somewhere near the top of the pile, simply because Brescia manages to pack so much into a 90-minute running time.

American commandos, led by Captain Murphy (Guy Madison), parachute into occupied Normandy, where Lt. Strobel (Peter Lee Lawrence), a German spy, helps them penetrate a flamethrower installations which threatens the landings on Omaha Beach. Murphy is skeptical of his mission's practicality, but Strobel is fanatically dedicated to destroying the base, and the two butt heads several times before the film's bullet-ridden climax.

This was an Italian-French co-production, and was quite possibly shot in France – this is noticeable in the first few shots. For once, an Italian war films opens with the landscape actually looking like the country it represents. I can't count the times I've seen semi-arid climates and rock quarries passed off for "southern France", so Brescia's choice of shooting locations earns him major points in my book. The movie looks just as real throughout – uniforms, weapons, vehicles and sets all look very authentic. Many Italian directors, such as Leon Klimovsky and Umberto Lenzi, disregarded accuracy in favor of action, and that damaged their credibility. Here, one can respect the time and money Brescia puts into making his film look credible.

This was Guy Madison's first Italian war movie, and he hasn't grown comfortable yet in a part which he would eventually own in the genre – he's starred in several similarly-themed films, each helmed by a different director. Man, does this guy get around! That said, he seems a bit unsure of himself as Captain Murphy, quite possibly because the role has its limitations. Murphy is cynical and critical of the way his mission was planned by superiors and how he's been ordered to execute it, but that's about all he gets to say – and he says it so many times that his dialog gets old and worn out very fast.

In direct contrast, Peter Lee Lawrence seems to be enjoying himself as Lt. Strobel, and has plenty of good dialog as well as some physically active scenes to be involved in. From the moment we meet him, Strobel is obsessed with the success of his mission, even if it means killing anyone who gets in his way. But he also has a tender side, demonstrated in his love for the French partisan girl Denise (Erika Blanc), a relationship which never gets the full development it deserves.

Brescia then loads his supporting cast with familiar names and faces, most notably, Max Tarilli ("Hornet's Nest"), an always under-used and under-appreciated actor. Here, Tarilli is a vicious German Corporal who is hot on the trail of Murphy's commandos, and never ceases in his search. It's refreshing to see what talent Tarilli has, and he never appears less than fully convincing as the vicious-Nazi-type. Massimo Carocci, Pierre Richard, Giuseppe Castellano, Luciano Catenacci, Gianni Pulone, and Giovanni Ivan Scratuglia all have small parts, too, which give a necessary boost.

When stacked up against similar films, such as "Where Eagles Dare", "Attack and Retreat" or "Tobruk", this little action story doesn't hold up as well. But Brescia takes his craft seriously, and earnestly tries to make everything look and sound as good as possible given the circumstances. "Hell in Normandy" is a well-meaning war film with a good premise and enough good acting, suspense and violent action to keep it entertaining, even if it is all clichéd.

Silly Sarno trying for "Inner Sanctum"

No accounting for taste, but this ludicrous Joe Sarno film fails in both the porn and fantasy/suspense realms. I've watched it several times, and have yet to be hypnotized by its nonsensical plot & direction.

Quite bluntly, it's about getting even, with an indigestible dollop of fake-spiritualism and mumbo jumbo added. Had Sarno gone for a more straightforward (and appropriate) voodoo plot line, I suspect fans would have rejected it outright.

Instead he has blonde heroine Carla (Patricia McNair, appearing using a pseudonym and punished with 9th billing) bamboozled by her co-worker Enid (tall but unattractive Carol Holleck) to become mixed up with Cult of Pan leader Martha (big-bosomed Helena Clayton). (This is hardly at the level of classic fantasy writing on the subject by Arthur Machen.) It's established early on, killing suspense stone dead, that Martha is using her retarded brother as part of the Quarter Moon rituals held by scantily clad priestesses of the cult. Of course there's a brother/sister incest scene inserted (but tame) by Sarno, as is his wont.

Ridiculous fantasy involves an aphrodisiac, one of Sarno's lamest and most oft-used plot ploys. In this case it becomes a fantasy motif. Carla is angry with her relatives who repress her, Aunt Julie (Bella Donna, equally lousy in Sarno's MY BODY HUNGERS) and Julie's daughter (her cousin) Tracey (blank 1-shot thesp "Laura London"). She uses Martha's magic potion to turn them into uncontrollable nymphomaniacs.

Key element, and you have to be a card-carrying Sarno sycophant to buy it, is the title roses (black & white hardly does them justice), which are not just the cult's chief fetish but the nympho trigger. They are delivered like clockwork to the victims, triggering the unquenchable lust in conjunction with the aphrodisiac potion. They also come in handy at the rituals, for sexual stimulation by rubbing them all over the woman designated as Pan's chosen one, after drinking the wine of Delphi. I much prefer Sarno's explicit lesbian dramas to this sublimation approach.

Watching this asinine nonsense, mainly played with a straight face, though fortuneteller Martha occasionally recites cliché howlers like "It was in the cards" or "The moon waits for no one", is a chore. I'm not sure whether RED ROSES qualifies as high camp or low camp, but an adaptation for the stage by Charles Busch might be in the cards.

The scenes of aunt and daughter going sexually mad are not titillating but merely stupid, as they attack the rose-delivery-men with a "me first" attitude. Incest between the two is also implied, this being a Sarno film. For ultra-cheapness, the first delivery boy is played by the film's assistant gaffer! Also cheap is the use of a crummy library music score, and basically two under-dressed sets: the dim-lit ceremony room where the gals get freaky with nights of wine & roses, and the desultory apartment where Carla's family lives. Supposedly ironic ending has little impact -Sarno could have taken a few lessons from William Castle before treading on his suspense "shocker" territory.

A Swedish film in eight episodes

"The discovery" (In Chaplin's block) director Hans Abramson sublimates his need for sex and drugs in an exploration of childhood. The drama is set in London at # 3 Pownall Terrace , where Charles Chaplin spent his childhood. A slum neighborhood where the Music Hall tradition lives on, carried out by some singing and dancing girls. In Jörn Donners "He She" a loving couple in a hotel room makes thorough hygienic preparations for having sex. This foreplay take so long that there is no time for lovemaking. A sprawling collection of short films that never manage to fit in under the title of "Stimulantia". Somewhere along the way this proud and unusual project drove in the ditch. However a must for Swedish film buffs.

Review :

Erik Schumann goes after an LSD-sex ring

"When Night Falls on the Reeperbahn" is a somewhat glossy production that bears some of the signs of its times, the sixties. This was when spy movies and spoofs were big sellers. It was when movies turned quirky or humorous with sixties humor. This appears in several sequences here. It comes in during a mud wrestling sequence in a club featuring female wrestlers, and it appears during several fights. It's sort of how the television Batman was done. Although for the most part the story is serious, it still maintains this underlying tone of being jocular.

The story is narrated at times by a reporter, played by Erik Schumann. His narration and his role are cynical and humorous in that way. He moves in and out of the action. Hamburg has a new racket. Everyone involved is seemingly respectable, well-dressed and not impoverished. There is a group of young men, well-dressed who supply girls looking for sex and thrills and some money with LSD. They then cavort with the respectable but leering, lecherous and horny businessmen of Hamburg. Schumann is out to uncover this ring because one of the girls has had a bad trip and been killed in an auto accident. Schumann's helped out by Heinz Reincke, a minor pimp who likes to brawl. One of the gang members wants out because he's fallen in love with an innocent girl, and she's fodder for being given an LSD cocktail without her knowing it. The whole business turns murderous when one of the girls might talk.

The movie is quite well done with nice camera work, good acting and color. It moves right along. It's not low budget. It exploits the LSD craze of the times, as this drug was introduced and became known at that time. Not at all a bad film for what it is.

Watch Way Out Trailer :

Review :

Not So "Bad"

This is one of the better films I've seen about drug addiction, at least from the POV of the confirmed addict. It sadly doesn't show what makes one get into it the first place (if everyone who smoked pot became heroin users, as this film professes, there would be tens of millions of heroin users in this country). In fact, we see an intelligent, sane guy suddenly shoot up one day with his friend, a heroin addict. His friend never pressured him, and the guy could clearly see how messed up it makes one, so why would a smart guy do that? Stuff like that drives me crazy. Still, the acting, all by real-life former junkies, is pitch perfect, and it's refreshing to see a film from that era from the POV of Latin Americans. There's actually some fun stuff in this too, like the planning of a robbery of a jewelry store. In fact, the robbery sequences and the narration make me wonder if Gus Van Sant didn't take a few tips from this film when making 'Drugstore Cowboy'.

This film was released on DVD on the 'Something Weird' label, but despite the blatant 'I found Jesus' ending (which I actually found affirming despite how squeamish I usually get from religious message movies) it isn't camp or 'bad'. In fact, I'd hold it up there with the other good anti-drug movies from that era like 'A Hatful of Rain' and 'Sweet Love Bitter'.

I would catch it if I could.

When I was 16, in 1976, I was meant to be doing homework and subconsciously searching for role models other than Ernest Borgnine when I came accross this movie on TV. It instantly changed my perception on several fronts. It was everything I was looking for; absurdity, animal liberation, sexual references and more.

My predicament is this. I have not seen the movie again and rely on my old brain to recollect that magnificent hour and a half. [true] Perhaps others can relate to this. There is a part of me that wants to see the movie again and another part that wants to hold onto the glorious image of 1976. In any case it is unobtainable in this country. I appreciate the space for expressing my feelings, seriously.

As if the original story is not strange enough, here we have it told, in part realistically, with a grown man hit in the face with a ping pong bat and part as some fetishist, surrealist exercise with shades of Andy Warhol.

As if the director has not given himself enough problems he then compounds the situation with an appalling sense of pace.

It is a shame because this passionate piece has marvellous images, dreamlike episodes, some sexiness and then, regrettably long stretches when one's eyes begin to glaze over.

Certainly bizarre and worth a view but, well you have been warned!

the worst of the "Tammy" movies

This movie is based on the television series that aired 1965-1966. The movie in and of itself is, well ... just okay, but compared to the other 3 Tammy movies, "Tammy & the Millionaire" is pretty bad. The original storyline is only loosely used. Except for the change from Debbie to Sandra, the first 3 movies followed continuity & storyline very strictly. This film, as well as the TV series, has very little to do with the original. The charm & warmth of the first 3 films is lost on this one. It is very much like 60's campy television, which is great for "I dream of Jeannie" or "The Brady Bunch", but doesn't fair well for Tammy. Debbie Watson who played Tammy in both the TV series, and this movie, just doesn't do the character justice.

I highly recommend "Tammy & the Bachelor" with Debbie Reynolds (the original) or "Tammy Tell me True" with Sandra Dee. Also note; in the first 3 movies the character is named Tammy Tyre. In "Tammy & the Millioniare" she is Tammy Tarleton. I imagine this allowed them to completely abandon the original storyline, as well as the original talent & charm of the other films.

Shock horror euro-western delivers on all fronts

The Stranger (Tomas Milian) arrives in the town known by the local Indian tribes as "The Unhappy Place" to see the bodies of his recent partners in crime hanging in front of him. Flashbacks have already revealed that he had been betrayed and left for dead by the gang, led by Oats (Piero Lulli), following a theft of gold from the army.

The two most prominent townsfolk, Tembler (Quesada) and Hagerman (Sanz) have split the stolen gold between them, and are keeping it hidden from Sorrow (Camardiel), a larger than life bandit whose "muchachos" dress all in black and, lets say, presumably enjoy the pleasures of men. Throw into the pot the mysterious figure of Hagerman's imprisoned wife, who beckons the Stranger from her cell window, and you have a very strange, yet apt, setting for this highly entertaining and frankly bizarre movie.

In fact, this film is straight out of horror territory, from the Stranger's first screen appearance - clawing his way out of an open grave - until its bitter ending. The mood is ably assisted by Ivan Vandor's score, which adds suitable suspense and tension, particularly during the scenes portraying Hagerman, his wife and her relationship with the Stranger.

The cast is quite superb, particularly Sanz in the part of the treacherous Hagerman. Milian meanwhile plays the Stranger role competently but fairly static without the mysterious charisma of a Nero or Eastwood. I am a huge fan of Milian, but much prefer to see his characters portray a little more humour (as he does so brilliantly in Face to Face and the Big Gundown, to name just two performances).

At times graphic (like the notorious scalping scene, or the sight of Oaks' body being torn apart by the locals desperately clawing at the gold bullets within his barely alive body), at times obviously low budget (such as the scene in which the Stranger is tortured, by being subjected to blood sucking bats and other creatures), but captivating throughout. One of the "must view" euro-westerns, in my view.

She has sought solace in the ministrations of her effeminate houseboy. Underrated little classic

Underrated little classic here. The setting is a small southern army base and behind the formality of peacetime military life is a hotbed of sexual repressions and obsessions. Elizabeth Taylor is wonderfully overripe as the Major's unfaithful wife. Her hilarious party food monologue is a career highlight. Marlon Brando as the macho Major she calls "prissy" does an amazing job with a role that requires him to be all emotionally buttoned up while just barely keeping a lid on an obsession he has with a serviceman (Robert Forster).

The real standout in the cast is Brian Keith. He creates a dimensional character out of a man cut off from his feelings who one day is forced to confront them. In this unusual but endlessly engrossing movie, he is a marvel.
