Stagecoach-Robbing Buddies Compete For Music Hall Songstress

This stodgy, unimaginative western was made in 1967, ten years after the genre had ceased to interest anyone. Important plot elements are left unresolved. Guy's love for Lillie, once it is thwarted, is simply dropped, and Guy doesn't seem bothered. Nobody refers to it again. The story's ending is utterly unconvincing, as though the writers were unsure how to 'tidy' the plot strands, and simply decided to cut the gordian knot. The actual ride to the tree happens in the first reel, and nothing resembling it happens in the rest of the movie. Jack Lord and James Farentino are pretty, and pretty good, as the male leads: they turn in competent journeyman performances. Melodie Johnson is miscast as Lillie: her radically unsexy screen presence is symbolised by the cringingly awful mimed song in her stage act. A wooden-headed plot, tediously predictable stunt action and weak humour can't prevent this being an amiable, if unchallenging, piece of entertainment. Curiously for such an unambitious film, it echoes and prefigures more sophisticated westerns of its era: the two heroes, trapped in a hovel, wisecrack while their assailants pile on the firepower ("Butch Cassidy", 1969) and they are saved from the noose by their partner's fancy shooting ("The Good, The Bad &c.", 1966). Not worth a trip to the cinema, but a mildly pleasant TV experience on a wet afternoon - which is how I stumbled across it.

A film that i will remember always

This film is excellent, and i am always remembering its songs as part of my inner life. I like the actors the actress above all and I think this film should be regarded as one of the best films for children in Spanish language. From my point of view this film has very beautiful songs such as the ones sung by Hilda Aguirre, who for the other part is one of the best actresses i have ever seen, her performance is very credible and I think her angelical face matches the role quite well. However,I would like to highlight its faults that are its end, which is quite inexplicable according to the plot and some other parts of the plot that seem to be quite out of place.

Brilliant Sci-Fi horror that will mesmerise and get you thinking!

Quatermass and the Pit is one of the finest of Hammer's vast and largely very fine oeuvre. Strangely, however, when you hear people speak of Hammer horror, this film rarely gets a mention, and that's a great injustice as it easily ranks up there with the best of them. The plot follows a group of construction workers that discover a plot of skeletons while extending London's subway station. This immediately attracts the attention of local scientists Mathew Roney and Barbara Judd, and later the man of the title; Dr Quatermass, who end up facing opposition from both the army and the press while trying to investigate the find. Where did the skeletons come from? How did they get there? And what's the meaning behind that bomb in the tunnel? All these questions and more are answered in Quatermass and the Pit.

As you might expect, the film is very camp. The effects are truly ridiculous and very easy to laugh at; but they add to the fun and charm of the movie. The reason why Hammer Horror films succeed is that, despite being unpleasant at times, it's obvious that they were made with a lot of heart, and the good nature that went into making them always shines through. Unlike many horror (or Sci-Fi) films, however, this one actually bothers to pose some interesting questions and really gets you thinking. The normal idea behind alien based Sci-Fi is completely turned on it's head, and it makes for both an enjoyable and interesting, not to mention original movie. It's quite ingenious, in fact; much more so than many recent 'thought-provoking' movies. There is also quite a lot of the trademark British humour in the film, which is always nice to see. It's obvious that the film is meant to be tongue in cheek anyway, but it's always nice to have a few moments of laughter in there. Quatermass and the Pit is directed by Hammer Horror supremo Roy Ward Baker. When people think of Hammer directors, it's often Terrence Fisher that comes out on top; but Baker is by far my favourite. He's delivered the lovely Asylum, the ingenious Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, not to mention The Vampire Lovers; and now this. And that's only the ones that I've seen!

Overall, this is an incredible movie. It's generous mix of horror, Sci-Fi and fantasy is truly refreshing and it makes for an interesting and enjoyable ride. I loved every minute of this film, and it easily ranks as one of the best Hammer Horror's that I've seen. Make sure you don't skip this one.

the movie wasn't as much of a treasure as the book

When I was in 5th grade, we read "Snow Treasure" as a class reading. A was-it-true-or-not story of how children in Nazi-occupied Norway helped smuggle gold bullion out of the country, it was a pretty interesting book. I then decided to watch the movie based on it. The movie underwhelmed me. James Franciscus, as one of the Nazis, made the movie watchable, but they could have done more with the movie. The best scene was when Franciscus' character tells the townspeople that they have to obey the Nazis' orders "...for your own good." Obviously, that's the fascist philosophy: impose rules on everyone, and tell them that it's for their own good. But overall, the movie didn't end up being what it could have been.

So-so spaghetti western ..........

This 1967 spaghetti western features former teen idol Edd "Kookie" Byrnes and Italian western favorite George Hilton. The somewhat confusing plot involves hired gun mercenaries doing battle with a series of would-be tough guys and their corrupt leader.

Byrnes starred in several foreign westerns during this period of his career, with varying degrees of success. Several in 1967 paired Byrnes with Hilton. These were entertaining, though hardly memorable.

Fans of the spaghetti genre will find this one interesting, with both lead actors doing their best to raise the level of the film a few notches. Others beware, this one can be a little hard to follow at times!

Two young women from England's northern counties; the plain Brenda and the flamboyant Yvonne, arrive in London to find fame and fortune. Swinging London was almost like this

I was living in London when this film opened, and it now seems an oddly accurate time capsule of the period, somewhere between trendy and tatty. Critics hated the film for trying to create a female Laurel and Hardy, but now it's the colours, the clothes and the attitude that seems right (although it's hard to forgive those helium-voiced gay stereotypes). Trivia note; the character names and places, pieced together, form most of the first verse of 'Jabberwocky', suggesting the intention to create a new Alice in Wonderland.
