Plodding...

Literally: plodding. With a title like SANTO VS. THE HEADHUNTERS, one might expect... well, some headhunting, if nothing else. Unfortunately, the hunting of heads is kept to a bare minimum, as is the action (the REAL action, although Santo- or a double- wrestles a 'gator and a leopard). The great bulk of this movie is comprised of very, very, very long scenes of people WALKING. Most of this walking is set to Muzak to keep the viewer from nodding off, but it's just not enough. You'll find yourself startling yourself awake with your own snoring; it's THAT bad. Santo, though he appears in the first shot (being choked by an assailant), doesn't really have a lot to do until near the end, when he finally gets to knock some heads- but it's too little, too late.

Review :

Not terribly audience-friendly, but smart and very, very cool.

This isn't your average James Bond knockoff spy thriller; the fact that the screenplay is by playwright Harold Pinter is the first clue. It's a bit strange to see such exquisitely Pinter-esque dialogue (the laconic, seemingly innocuous sentences; the profound silences; the syntax that isn't quite how real people actually talk) in a spy movie, but it really works.

Quiller isn't your average spy. He's played by George Segal with a cool superficiality that works very nicely; he doesn't go charging in with guns blazing -- he doesn't even carry a gun -- and the one time he does try to fight his way out of a sticky spot, he gets pounded. The other standouts in the cast are Alec Guinness as Quiller's controller, and Max von Sydow as the leader of the neo-Nazi cell that Quiller is attempting to crack.

At first glance, the movie is deeply frustrating, and the script appears full of holes, but in fact, it's so smart that it assumes the audience is bright enough to pick up on the breadcrumb trail of clues that it's actually leaving. All in all, I recommend it, but with reservations. If you like tidy conclusions and have limited patience with extreme subtlety, this may not be to your taste.

Oh I really liked this movie!!

What a brilliant caper movie! Before I go on, though, I need to point out that this movie is a reworking of the movie Rififi (1954)--a French caper movie. While Rififi generally gets higher marks among critics, I also liked this one.

The movie is unusual in that it has such a multinational cast and quite a bit of the movie is dubbed because of this. This didn't matter to say the least. However, it was interesting to see Adolfo Celi in the movie. He was the lead villain in Bond's THUNDERBALL and in this movie his voice is dubbed with a totally different voice and so he sounds a lot different.

Now on to what I loved--the complicated and exciting plot. It just keeps you guessing again and again--even up until the last scene. Also, the acting was great and the characters were well-written--everyone seemed to be at the top of their form.

So, if you want a movie about a gang of thieves pulling the ultimate heist and want to see one that's among the best, give this film a try--if you can find it, as it's not exactly a well-known flick. Perhaps with so many films like it ("Topkapi", "The Killing""Bob le Flambeur" and many others) it just got lost in the process.,

Review :

An unforgettable adaptation of an excellent novel

This movie is based on what many consider one of the greatest novels ever written, Tarjei Vesaas' The Birds.

As in all Vesaas novels, the story takes place in a rural setting, and the proximity to nature is an obvious factor. Also, the immense psychological depth of the characters is important.

The protagonist is Mateusz, perhaps 35-40 years of age, who lives with his sister Olga. He is, in some way or another, "retarded", but apparently not emotionally so. This story gives a captivating insight into his world.

The pace is quite slow, the black-and-white pictures are beautiful, the focus is on building an atmosphere and developing the characters, and the choice of music is of very good taste.

There's nothing to see here for those who want action or fun. This is a sincere movie which mature viewers may find totally unforgettable.

Standing the test of time

Thank God that Audrey Hepburn made this film before slipping off into an extended temporary retirement. Was she too old for this movie? Not for the segments that deal with the latter part of the married relationship. The movie spans eleven years and, yes, it is a bit of a visual stretch to see a 37 year old Audrey portraying a 22 year old college woman, but her performance throughout was nothing short of brilliant. This film was a tremendous departure for her. In Two for the Road she does not play the part of the doe-eyed delicate creature of her earlier movies. She even abandoned, reluctantly, her trademark Givenchy wardrobe to sink her teeth into a gritty, visceral part. Many critics of the time remarked on its art house appeal, due in large part to the back and forth sequence editing and the clever juxtaposition of similarities, parallels and contrasts in scenes spanning eleven years. The film must have been incredibly fresh and jarring in its day, abandoning a linear narrative approach to the history of a marriage. Even today it comes across as very "contemporary." Albert Finney delivers an equally strong performance. There is genuine chemistry between Finney and Hepburn. The viewer sees all that is wonderful and horrible about the dynamics of a couple that comes to realize that despite mutual infidelity they still love each other and belong to one another.
